New Braunfels, Texas
Hidden away between the more famous Texas destinations of Austin and San Antonio, New Braunfels offers something a little different. A classic Texas Hill Country town, it is amazing family-friendly, and far less likely to be booked up than its larger and more well-known neighbours. From tubing down the Guadalupe River to splashing about at a waterpark, there is an awful lot to do here for the youngsters, and parents will love the chance to discover some of the best Texas wineries around!
Sugar Loaf Mountain, Michigan
Michigan is a great last-minute vacation destination for outdoorsy families, and Sugar Loaf Mountain is a great spot to get back to nature and do a little back country exploring. There are some serious peaks to climb, as well as some gentler hiking trails to explore, and all in all, it makes a fantastic and exciting place to discover with the kids.
Amelia Island, Florida
Do your kids love the sea? Love outdoor sports? Love getting their hands dirty? Love seafood? Then why not head down to Florida and take them shrimping on Amelia Island? Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean on one side, and an estuary of three separate rivers on the other, Amelia Island is one of the main centres of US shrimping, and probably the birthplace of modern industry! Kids will love having a go at handling the large shrimping nets, as well as the chance to learn a little more about the local flora, fauna, and culture. Parents will be fascinated by the local history, and everyone will love tasting their catch at the end of the day!
Civil Rights Trail Road Trip
A road trip is one of the best and least complicated family vacations to organise, and one that can be planned and executed at the drop of a hat! The US Civil Rights Trail is a great way to structure a road trip, with over 130 sites connected across 15 states, that bring the past to life. You’ll get a chance to walk in the footsteps of history at the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, or get interactive and earn your Ranger badges at the Tuskegee Airmen Museum. This fascinating cross-country adventure is a must for history-loving families.
Mexican Rivieria, Mexico
Mexico is always a great choice when it comes to a last-minute vacation, due to its unbelievable choice of awesome destinations, all of which are relatively affordable! The Mexican Riviera stretches down the Pacific Coast of the country and is one of the best places in the world for kids (and adults) who love nature, and marine life in particular. Get up close and personal with humpback whales in Baja California, swim with Mobula rays in Zihuatanejo, and discover the joys of bioluminescence and baby turtles in Puerto Escondido!
