Blogging 101 | WordPress Plugins: How Many is Too Many?

August 27, 2019

There are many reasons why having WordPress plugins installed is an important part of owning a blog on self-hosted WordPress. The reasons all have to do with speed, ease of navigation, ability to review visitors’ information and so on and so forth. WordPress plugins are important to the overall functionality and personality of your blog, there is such a thing as too many WordPress plugins.

Today I’m going to dig a little deeper into this topic to help guide you forward with WordPress plugins so that you don’t install too many and overload your blog.

Issues caused by too many WordPress plugins

WordPress and Blog

Site Crashing

If your site continuously crashes or gives visitors an error page from time to time, then you may have too many WordPress plugins. Some WordPress plugins hog resources and can even make your host take the blog down until you figure out which plugins are to blame for the crash.

Security Vulnerability

Some WordPress plugins aren’t safe for your blog, while they may function well, some plugins tend to leave a security vulnerability open for hackers to gain access to your WordPress blog. That’s why it’s important to research any WordPress plugin before installing on your blog.

Slow Page Speed

If you’ve found that your blog is loading slower than normal then you may have too many WordPress plugins installed. It’s best to review your plugins and get rid of any that may be slowing your blog down and aren’t necessary for the function of your site.

How Many WordPress Plugins Are Too Many?

That’s just it, there’s no real number that can answer this question. The key to knowing whether or not you have too many WordPress plugins installed is to figure out if you’re experiencing any of the issues I referenced above. Site load time, vulnerabilities and lags or errors when people come to visit your blog are all key things to watch for when you’re wondering if you have too many WordPress plugins installed.

The best advice I can give you is to only use the WordPress plugins that you feel you absolutely need. This could be plugins to help with blog caching to social media sharing options and plugins that help with SEO or overall functionality of your blog are best options to keep installed when you find that your blog is slowing down due to an extensive list of WordPress plugins installed.
