At the end of your working-from-home day, when you’ve made the commute from the computer to the couch, wouldn’t it be nice to treat yourself to a long bath and put those work reports to the back of your mind?
There is no doubt that many of us are far more aware of the importance of our wellbeing and self-care can play a vital role in that. For many of us, even in the past year, our mental health has been affected like nothing we have experienced before. Not being able to do the things we would usually do, see people, socialise, or interact in a normal way. We adapted, of course, but it certainly made us more aware of what we can do to help ourselves.
When it comes to wellbeing and self-care, how you help yourself will be different top how you help others. However, it is important for you to know the differences, so that you can act accordingly. Helping others can be a form of self-care for you, as we all know the power of showing kindness can make us feel good, right? So here are some of the ways you can help yourself and help others when it comes to wellbeing and self-care.
How you can help yourself
Let’s start with how you can help yourself. You can’t fill a glass from an empty jug, so before helping others it is crucial you feel happy and content with yourself. So here are some of the things that you can do to help yourself when it comes to focusing on personal wellbeing and self-care.
Exercise
Exercise is one of the best ways that you can feel good about yourself and it can be one of the ultimate actions of self-care. Exercise naturally makes you feel good because of the release of hormones and endorphins around your body. Of course, motivating yourself to exercise can be the hard part. But once you do, there is no denying how good you feel afterwards. Regular exercise or just making the point of being more active such as walking places, for example, can improve your mental wellbeing.
Your diet
What you consume and choose to nourish your body with can have a positive or negative effect, depending on what it is. A healthy balanced diet will always help you to feel good and increase your energy levels as well as increasing your water intake. However, too much sugar, junk, caffeine, and alcohol can have the opposite effect. Choose to nourish your body with the things you know will help you to feel good on the inside and out.
Mental health awareness
Part of focusing on your wellbeing and actively choosing self-care is noting that it is much to do with your mental health, and having an awareness of how you feel right now will help you to do the right thing when it comes to self-care. Feeling anxious? It might be time to meditate or try some yoga. Feeling worried? Talk about it with a partner or friend. Feeling overwhelmed? Write it down in a journal or jump in a warm hot bath to soak away the stress. Being aware of your mental health will help you to focus on positive wellbeing and the things you can do to help.
Time for yourself
Time for yourself can also be a great way to help you feel better and improve your own wellbeing. The self-care actions you choose to do might be reading a book, having a bath, heading out for a walk, or embracing a hobby that you have for yourself, to name a few. Time for yourself is good for you.
How you can help others
Of course, we always want to do what we can to help others, and when you know that you are mentally in a good place yourself, then you can turn your attention to others and help them. Self-care and wellbeing are different when you are helping someone else, so here are a few suggestions that can help you let others know you are there to help.
Send a gift
Sometimes a gift is all it takes to show someone that you are thinking about them. It could be a doorstep delivery of goodies, flowers delivered, or even ordering a wellbeing gift box so that they know they need to focus some time on themselves. A gift doesn’t have to be anting extravagant, but it shows you are there and thinking of them.
Make a phone call or send a text
A great way to help someone else is to pick up the phone and call them, or if you think that might be too much, send them a text. Knowing that you have made the effort to talk to them will help them to feel better. Nothing beats a good conversation, and now more than ever we understand the power of talking. Use it.
Organise some time to spend with one another
A phone conversation is one thing, but meeting up and having a chat, going for coffee or a walk together can be even more powerful. Sometimes the ultimate self-care is the connection with others, friends, and loved ones, so take the time to organise a meet-up with someone you know needs it the most right now.
Listen
It is just as important to take the time to listen. Doing this will help them to feel heard. Often they just want someone to understand where they are coming from, and listening can help them to make peace with whatever it is that is on their minds.
Help with childcare
Finally, if a friend or loved one has children, a great way to help them is to help out with childcare. Take their children off their hands for a few hours. Let them reconnect with their partner, enjoy a nap or catch up with things they have put off. This can be one of the biggest acts of kindness that goes a long way to helping people who are struggling with looking after their wellbeing or having time to implement some self-care.
Hopefully, these tips will help you to help yourself as well as others when it comes to wellbeing and self-care.
