Wash your hands filthy animal [AD-GIFTED]

January 28, 2019

This is a gifted partnership with Fy!

Given that we are in midst of flu season, not to mention the norovirus as well as all the other winter ailments doing the rounds. When one of these viruses sets its sights on a family member, it is just a ticking bomb before it slowly takes out the others. It is important that we are all keeping a check on our personal hand hygiene. Especially after visiting the bathroom, coughing, sneezing etc.

How to encourage everyone to wash their hands

Remind, remind, remind

As any parent will tell you there is only so many times you can say to your beloved child – have you washed your hands? Before you end up saying it on autopilot. I have been known to ask Mr Boo if he has washed his hands, as well as friends as though they were my own children instead of grown adults.

Although us adults are also reminded of the importance of hand washing when we are at work. When visiting restrooms in shopping centres, motorway services and restaurants. We somehow never think to remind ourselves or save ourselves the nagging of reminding the children at home. Well, now I have the perfect piece of wall art for you to display in your bathroom or cloakroom…

Whilst I will admit the wording of ‘wash your hands you filthy animal‘ might not be to everyone’s taste. It is something that is perfect for us as a family. Framed and guarded against the splashes and grime, it’s proudly on display in the family bathroom.

Placed near the toilet cistern, everyone is forced to look at this print as they press the flush. Hopefully reminding them that their next action is to wash their hands. Not only for their own personal hygiene but for the good of all of them family – and any guests that should come to visit.

Let’s sing happy birthday

Having previously worked in the NHS I am all too familiar with the correct six step method for washing hands. Attempting to teach this to my three children is possibly a little beyond them at the moment. However, this doesn’t mean that all those infection control lectures have been lost.

To at least ensure that the children are washing their hands for a good amount of time. They have been encouraged to sing the happy birthday day song whilst they wash. A technique that I was during a training session and it has just stuck with me – and yes, I do frequently find myself singing happy birthday (albeit in my head) whilst washing my hands.

Hand sanitiser or soap?

The easy answer to this is to have both available. In each bathroom/toilet in my house, you will find both hand sanitiser and wall mounted soap dispensers available. Whilst using soap is always the preferred method, there are times when a squirt of hand sanitiser is all that is required.

During the winter season, it’s wash your hands and then add a squirt of hand sanitiser just to be on the safe side!
