Top 5 Security Tips for your Garage this Christmas

It’s the lead up to Christmas and most of us have completed our Christmas shopping and wrapped all the presents but where do you store them? Well what better place to hide them… than in the garage! It’s out of the way of nosey children (and excited partners for that matter!) and they don’t take up all the room in the house, leaving extra space for the decorations.

Most of us are super vigilant when it comes to home safety, but around Christmas time it’s even more important to consider carefully how you are protecting your home (and those all-important gifts!) from potential dangers, especially if you’re utilising your outdoor buildings for additional storage. Here, I’ve put together a few tips to ensure your concrete garage, wooden garage or prefix garage is more secure this Christmas.

1. Operation Lock Down

Make sure all entry points into your garage are securely locked, whether that’s a  side door or main door and any windows in your garage, as well as any interior doors you may have. At this time of year, it is advisable to cover the windows so nobody can look in, as well as removing any hidden spare keys that you might usually leave for yourself in emergencies.

2. Keep it Hidden

It’s essential to make sure any valuable items are out of sight. If you have lots of presents that are proving difficult to hide it’s worth purchasing some lockable storage cupboards or temporary boxes that could appear less appealing to intruders.

3. Alarms

If you haven’t got a security system in place for your garage, invest in one now! There are lots of different types of alarms from bell alarms, smart home security systems and Wi-Fi connected ones which you can hook up to other devices. Remember the best ones are visible and more importantly, a warning to keep away.

4. Motion Sensors

Burglar deterrents such as motion sensors will compliment your alarm system perfectly as they can detect moving objects outside and inside your home. Not only can motion set off an alarm, but this action can also trigger a light and camera recording to act as a deterrent for any potential criminals.

5. Old Tricks

The simplest ideas can often be the most effective. Illuminating the outside area of your garage, leaving a radio turned on inside and of course never leaving a garage door open unattended are all great deterrents for intruders.
