There are some tried and tested tips for first-time parents that are worth remembering and I wanted to share with you what some of them are today.
When you become a parent for the first time, there is no denying how overwhelming it can feel. It can often be daunting how much you feel intense love for your newborn baby. These days there is so much information out there on what to do and what not to do in all aspects of life and looking after your little one will is no exception. Even unsolicited advice will come your way. However, there are some tried and tested tips for first-time parents that are worth remembering and I wanted to share with you what some of them are today.
Tried and tested tips for first-time parents
Expect to feel tired
You may have been warned about the lack of sleep, but actually being in the midst of it all is a different story altogether. So a great tip is to expect to feel tired and to not apologise for it. Your newborn will be waking a number of times in the night for feeds and attention, so if you expect tiredness then you won’t feel guilty for resting when your body needs you to. This brings me to the point of sleeping when the baby sleeps. Easier said than done I know, but allow yourself time to rest. You can’t pour from an empty cup.
It can be stressful
Having a newborn is stressful. If you expect it to be all sunshine and rainbows you are sadly mistaken. Of course, it is a wonderful time, and those first few months are blissful as you get to know your little one. But at the same time, it can be stressful. This is a whole new chapter in your life in which you might have little to no experience in. Give yourself a break and accept that sometimes there will be stress. However, there will be a whole lot of love as well.
Don’t fret over feeding
The whole feeding debate is one of those things that many new mothers struggle with. But there is one thing to remember, fed is best. So whether you breastfeed, express, or use formula and a bottle, as long as your baby is getting what they need from you then that is enough. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
Routine is great but don’t overthink it
Establishing a routine with your little ones is a great way to keep yourself in line with what your baby wants and needs. It can also help you to plan your day a little. However, don’t overthink your routine. In some cases, you naturally fall into your own feeding and sleeping pattern, so look out for common times of the day where these things take place. However, try not to force a routine. Often this can cause you unnecessary stress and worry as you try and force it.
Baby groups can be lifelines
It can be daunting to attend a baby group for the first time, but they can be lifelines for you as you navigate the baby days. Here you will be around like-minded people going through similar experiences. Don’t be put off if there are already established groups. Keep going and make conversations with people. You won’t regret it.
Getting out with the baby is good for the mind
Just getting out for a walk is so good for you. Put the baby in the pram and just get some fresh air. It is good for your mental health, stress levels, and tiredness, and the fresh air can also be helpful for your little one.
Don’t feel compelled to not hold your baby
We can often feel pressure to not hold our babies, but a cuddle and bond are formed beyond the times you are feeding your baby. So if you want to cuddle them while they sleep go for it, and don’t listen to anyone that tells you otherwise.
Learn to say no
Everyone wants a piece of you when you have had a baby. But it can also feel too much when it comes to too many people and guests. Learn to say no.
Accept help when offered
Also, be aware of accepting help. Whether that is for people to make you food, hold the baby while you shower, or help out in other ways in the home. Accepting help will help you to get the time you need.
Hopefully, these tips will help you when it comes to becoming first-time parents.
