Up until August of this year, I was an employee of an NHS Trust, a company in which I had worked for over 15 years. During that time I had gotten married, moved house twice and had three children. With Roo I returned to work when she was just 5 months old and Tigger was 10 months old when I returned to work after maternity leave.
Each time I returned to work, there was a huge sense of guilt that I was leaving them with a day nursery in order for me to continue my employment. That guilt isn’t helped by those around you who feel they need to say things like ‘why have children if you’re not going to look after them‘.
Returning to work when you are a parent is difficult no matter what your reasons for returning are, financial, career goals etc. Management of working and parenting is a challenge and something that keeps surprising me with new problems and situations. Part of the kids don’t come with a manual series the new The Working Parents’ Guide to Raising Happy and Confident Children is the latest book to the collection.
