When Roo moved from preschool to reception class her infant school joined the Children’s University programme. Inspiring the children to complete activities and learn new skills. For which they would earn learning hours which counted towards a graduation ceremony and certificates each year. It was through this programme that we discovered the range of activities and opportunities that our local library offered.
Whilst we had always visited to borrow books for the children. I was embarrassed to learn that they offered so much more than just books. From storytelling sessions, singalongs, arts and crafts, opportunities to meet up with other parents and children. As well as the Summer Reading Challenge…
Summer Reading Challenge
The Summer Reading Challenge takes place every year during the summer holidays and encourages children aged 4 – 11 to sign up to their local library and read six books of their choice. Children’s reading can ‘dip’ during the long summer holidays if they don’t have regular access to books and encouragement to read for pleasure but the Summer Reading Challenge helps get three-quarters of a million children into libraries each year to keep up their reading skills and confidence.
This year’s Summer Reading Challenge is inspired by the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing. The Space Chase adventure begins today and you can sign up at your local library throughout the summer – also check to see if your child’s school is hosting any sign up sessions.
Children receive special rewards each time they finish a book and there’s a certificate for everyone who completes the Challenge. Children can read whatever they like – fiction, fact books, poetry, joke books, picture books, audiobooks – just as long as they are borrowed from the library.
Beating the Summer Slump
Discovering these activities not only gave us something else that we could take part in. They also helped beat the summer slump over the school holidays. The summer slump os when children regress academically due to not having regular access to education resources and/or academic stimulation.
Will your children be signing up to the Summer Reading Challenge this year?
