You are holding your perfect little baby and he or she is growing so fast. At about 4 to 7 months, sometimes a little earlier, sometimes a little later, that little bundle of joy might start fussing a little more than normal. There is a good chance that all the extra crankiness is due to teething.
As a parent, seeing your baby hurting and in pain is horrible. Once you know what is making baby hurt or be cranky, you can start to try to make him or her feel better.
What are the signs of teething?
Biting: Teething infants tend to bite more. They will bite on their toys, their fingers, or just about anything they can get their mouth on. Babies bite on things because the pressure on their swollen gums helps to relieve the discomfort.
Sucking: Like biting, babies might suck more often, want more bottles or breastfeeding because it helps to relieve the pressure of the tooth coming through.
Loss of Appetite: Some babies will lose their appetite. Some babies will refuse to eat or even drink because of the pain in their mouth.
Drooling: All babies drool, but if you see your baby drooling more than normal, this can be a sign of teething. It is not uncommon for babies who have increased drooling to get diarrhea and a diaper rash. The excessive drooling can also cause a rash around your baby’s face, chin and chest. Try to keep the area as dry as possible.
Ear Pulling: If you have ever had a tooth ache or even a very bad sore thought, you might have felt the pain all the way up and into your ear. Some babies may pull on their ears trying to relieve the discomfort of their gums.
Irritability: Babies who are in pain from their teeth coming in might be more irritable and crankier than others. Trying to keep baby distracted can help. Extra snuggles can also help keep baby feeling better.
Fever: Sometimes a baby will get a very low-grade fever, under 100.4. A true fever which is over 100.4 degrees is not associated with teething and should be thought of as an illness.
