It’s been a long journey but you finally made it. You’ve purchased a house. Now you’re ready to turn it into a home. Though you’ve likely brought a lot from your old place with you, all that purging you did before the move likely has you in need of a few things. If you’re going to start getting used to the place, you’ll need to plan a few shopping trips. Not sure what you need to get? Here are a few categories to help you create an efficient shopping list.

Utility Supplies

To start, you want to make sure that your home is safe and efficient for use. That means picking up a few things from the utility category to get things in order. You’ll need a toolkit for odd and end minor repairs or for putting together furniture. Both a furnace and an ac filter should be purchased to keep the appliances running efficiently. Other utility basics can include light bulbs, extension cords, flashlights, batteries, candles, smoke detectors, and a first aid kit.

Kitchen Essentials

Perhaps you already have dishes and silverware from your old place, but there are a few things you may need to purchase to make your kitchen more efficient. This could include small kitchen appliances like a toaster, can opener, and blender. You will also need dishcloths, hand towels, paper products, drawer organizers, and kitchen decors like curtains, placemats, lighting, and floor mats. Chances are you probably didn’t pack food in the moving truck, so a trip to the grocery store is ideal so you don’t start wasting money on takeout.

Room and Bathroom

Bathroom Items

Depending on your decor ideas for your bathroom you may need to invest in new items to spruce the space up. This could include a shower curtain, shower rings, a tub mat, rugs, soap dishes, and shower organizers. You can also purchase new linens like towels and washcloths to match the room. Finally, picking up some toiletries like soap, lotion, alcohol, peroxide, toothpaste, and mouthwash are a must.

Cleaning Supplies

You’ll need to keep your new place spic and span so don’t forget to add cleaning supplies to the list. This not only includes sprays, soaps, and sponges but should also include mops, vacuum cleaners, brooms, dustpans, dusters, air fresheners, laundry detergent, and hampers.

Window Treatments

You’ll want to have your privacy in your new house so be sure to purchase window treatments for every room. Measure the windows to ensure that you’re getting the appropriate sizes. You can opt for blinds, shades, sheers, curtains, and drapes depending on your style choices.

Bedroom Needs

If you’ve bought a lot of your bedroom necessities with you, then there isn’t much to get here. You could buy things for more organization like closet and shoe organizers, hangers, hooks, and shelves. However, if you’re looking to revamp the style in your new house you should purchase new comforters, sheets, pillows, cases, area rugs, lamps, and other unique finds to make your bedroom feel like your own.

Home Decor

To place the final touches on your new home you can purchase decor to decorate your new house. This can include throw pillows, area rugs, sculptures, artwork, vases, plants, flowers, mirrors, clocks, chair or couch covers, bookcases, and shelving.

Lawn and Garden

Being the new kids on the block your neighbours are certainly going to be paying attention to how well-groomed the exterior of your home looks. If you want to make a good impression, be sure to invest in some lawn and garden items. A lawnmower, rake, and shovel are good tools to have on hand. You may also need flowers, mulch, stones, plants, dirt, gates, landscaping lights, and lawn furniture.

Home Security

No home is safe or complete without a bit of protection. Whether you live in a high-crime neighbourhood or not, you should protect your home, yourself, and your family with a home security system. They have options that range from basic noisemakers to more sophisticated options with cameras, motion sensors, floodlights, and remote access features.

You’ve searched far and wide. Saved hard and long. Now, you’ve finally moved into your new home. After you’ve unpacked your personal belongings, you can make an adequate list of things you need to fill the place even more. The categories listed above will help you to make sure you don’t forget things that are important to making the house a home.
