With its longer days and warmer temperatures, summer is the ideal time to head out and explore some of the UK’s scenic landscapes on foot. Whether you’re an experienced hiker or have never walked a trail before, there are walks throughout the UK to cater to any level of fitness and challenge.
If you’re looking for walking inspiration, you’re in the right place, as we’re going to walk you through five of the most scenic trails to try out on your summer holidays in the UK.
Scenic walks to enjoy this summer
Seven Sisters Cliffs, East Sussex
One of the most breathtaking coastal walks in the country can be found in the South Downs National Park. The Seven Sisters Cliffs route starts from the charming village of Seaford, taking walkers on a seven-mile hike along the iconic white chalk cliffs to look out over the English Channel.
It’s an incredibly pretty route, mixing the brightness of the surrounding countryside with views over the deep blue waves of the Channel stretching out into the distance. The Belle Tout Lighthouse is a perfect photo opportunity along the way, with the route reaching its end in the village of East Dean.
Helvellyn via Striding Edge, Lake District
This one’s more of a challenge, suitable for those who are looking to add a bit of mountainous adventure to their summer holiday. The hike up Helvellyn is a must for anyone who’s up for the more challenging task of scaling the third-highest peak in England.
Starting off in the village of Glenridding, where you can stock up on snacks and supplies, this trail takes hikers along the daunting Striding Edge ride. This narrow ridge features steep drops on either side that afford some incredible views out over the fells and valleys of the Lake District.
It’s not a hike for the faint of heart, and you’ll need to come prepared with proper footwear, but you can’t argue with the sheer beauty of the scenery you’ll be treated to along the way.
Giant’s Causeway Coastal Path, Northern Ireland
Over in Northern Ireland, the otherworldly wonder of the Giant’s Causeway is just waiting to be explored. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a place that deserves to be seen with your own two eyes, with its famous hexagonal basalt columns.
The eight-mile trail runs along the dramatic coastline, beginning at the Giant’s Causeway visitor centre. Along the way, you can appreciate the sound of the waves breaking against the cliffs and marvel at the unique geological formations of the area. You can even take pictures with the Giant’s Boot and appreciate the various other souvenirs the Causeway’s mythological creator left behind.
Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove, Dorset
Another incredible coastline is located along the south of England, with the Jurassic Coast stretching between Devon and Dorset. The entire coastal path is full of gorgeous views out over the English Channel, featuring geological formations and the allure of potential fossils.
The four-mile hike between Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove particularly stands out, taking walkers past towering sea stacks, limestone arches, hidden coves and rugged cliffs. Durdle Door’s impressive arch is one of the most photographed sites along the Jurassic Coast and the sheltered bay at Lulworth Cove is the perfect place to enjoy a well-earned relax at the end of your trek.
Hadrian’s Wall Path, Northumberland
Not quite so ancient as the previous two entries, the path along Hadrian’s Wall is still a contender for one of the most scenic routes in the entire UK. The 84-mile trail isn’t one you’ll be finishing off in a day, but you can choose to tackle one of the many individual sections on your visit.
Whichever part of the trail you walk, there’s rolling countryside and windswept scenery to enjoy, along with the timeworn majesty of the wall itself. There are ancient Roman forts, other fortifications, and dedicated visitor centres to wander around, giving you a feel for the weight of history that sits here.
