There is no hiding the fact that the cost of living increase will be affecting most of us financially. Energy prices have skyrocketed and it looks like there is not going to be any reduction anytime soon. This means that so many households are looking to make economical changes to their household habits and trying to cut their monthly costs.

Washing clothes is a chore we all have to do, and your washing machine, albeit an appliance that uses energy, is essential. But I have some good news for you. It is possible to save money when it comes to your washing machine. Here are some of the ways that you can do it.

Invest in a new machine

One of the first things that you might want to consider is investing in a new washing machine. Especially if yours is an older model. While this is effectively is spending more money initially the models available today are much more environmentally friendly and will likely use less energy in the long term. They also have factored in more eco-friendly approaches to laundry, where you can make some extra savings.

Make the switch to an ecoegg

Part of the cost when it comes to washing your clothes is the detergent you use. Many of us will have fallen into the habit of buying the same thing, but each week this cost can mount up. So you may want to consider making the switch to an ecoegg instead. You buy one ecoegg and enough laundry pellets to cover 70 washes for a fraction of the price it would cost you to buy detergent and softener with some of the big leading brands.

It is also a much more environmentally friendly way to wash your clothes and they work with stains and are suitable for sensitive skin. Why not try one yourself and see how you get on?

Reduce the temperature you wash your clothes at

Another great tip is to reduce the temperature that you wash your clothes. Many of us will be in the habit of washing clothes at 40 degrees, but reducing this to 30 degrees will still give you the same level of cleaning but will use less energy. Some detergent companies are even encouraging you to wash at 20 degrees, promising that you will still get excellent cleaning results. Try it and see for yourself.

Run your washing machine at different times of the day

Take a closer look at your energy bill, you may find that energy is charged at a lesser rate at different times of the day. So use this to your advantage. Load up your machine the night before and then place it on the time delay to start in the early hours of the morning. You will have washing completed for you, and you will have used energy at a lower rate. Sometimes energy prices decrease in the late evening, so if you are awake set a cycle for that time as well.

Maximise your load

We can often be guilty of running our washing machine without it being at full capacity. So if you have a washing machine that can take a large load, then take advantage of that. The less time we are using our machines, the more energy we are saving. If you are unsure as to how much capacity and weight your washing machine can take, take a look at the manual for some expert guidance.

Maintain your washing machine

Your washing machine will likely use up more energy if it isn’t clean or hasn’t been serviced regularly. You don’t need to call out an engineer to do this as you can buy internal cleaners that will help to ensure that all the pipework is clean and not clogged up. You should also take time to deep clean your washing machine, taking out the detergent drawer and checking the filter. Keeping your washing machine in clean and good working order means it will run smoothly, and only cost you what is necessary.

Air dry where possible

Finally, it can be tempting to put your clothes in the tumble dryer or even switch on the heating to help dry them, but this will cost you more energy. So ensure that you air dry as much as possible. Either using a washing line outside or a washing maiden indoors.

Hopefully, these tips will help you to save money when it comes to your washing machine.
