There is no denying that energy prices, rises and reducing our bills are all topics of conversation at the moment. With the prices already rising and further increases on the horizon, it is now more important than ever before for us to try and reduce our energy bills where possible. Obviously, we all need to be able to use energy in our homes, but what can we actively do to keep our usage as low as possible without it having too much impact on our lives? With that in mind, I wanted to share with you some of the things that you can do right now to reduce your energy bills.
Ways to help reduce your energy bills
Switch off appliances you are not using
One of the biggest wastes of energy usage is leaving appliances switched on at the plug or on standby. Even though you assume those appliances are switched off, they are still using energy constantly. Although small amounts they will all add up over time. Lights can also be big energy waste, especially when they are left on during the day when they are not needed. Being mindful about switching things off could save you a lot over the upcoming months.
Consider alternative heating systems
While we may all use radiators or something gas or electric-based for our heating during the winter months, there are other options to consider. Using a wood-burning stove or a burner could save you a lot as you are using a different source of energy. Installing a burner is easy to do if you have a chimney to get rid of the smoke created or you could have one installed. Overall this could save you quite a bit during the winter. It also creates a lovely atmosphere and lighting. Particularly cosy on a cold winter’s evening.
This is a great investment to make over the summer if you have the funds to do so and could help to save money long-term on your energy usage when it comes to heating.
Switch energy providers to obtain a better deal when the time is right
We may think that staying loyal to an energy provider is a good idea. But actually, this is where you could be wasting a lot of money. Most companies offer great deals and discounts to new customers. So take advantage of this and switch providers to get some of those savings yourself. While it is a bit uncertain right now, it is always a good idea to keep tabs on the deals that may get released and take advantage of locking into those rates before any impending price rise.
Research online will be able to help you compare what deal you are on now versus the best deals that are out there. It might be tempting to switch straight away, but you also need to factor in the impending price rise.
Rethink how you use your energy
It might be time to look at the habits you have when it comes to using energy in your home. We use energy for entertainment purposes, lighting and heating, but we also use it for things like cooking. So it might be time to think about how you cook and prepare food and try and make changes.
For example, one evening meal might mean you use an oven and a hob at the same time to prepare different elements. But could you do all of the elements using one thing? Perhaps one-pot stove dinners or using the oven to cook everything from rice and pasta to your full evening meal. Using one appliance is one lot of energy being used rather than multiple.
Change your light bulbs to more energy-efficient ones
We can’t always switch the lights off. We do need them from time to time. So a good way to save some extra energy is by switching the light bulbs to more energy-efficient ones. If you are unsure, you could always seek some advice in your local DIY store. They are the experts. This can make a big difference to your energy bills.
Use your common sense when it comes to your home
Sometimes using common sense can make a big difference to your heating bills. Keeping your heating temperature a few degrees cooler for example consistently can save you a lot. Instead of cranking it up all the time. You may also want to consider using blankets and adding an extra layer of clothing instead. Little changes made often can offer huge savings.
I hope this helps you reduce those energy bills now and for the months
ahead with the price increases on the horizon.
