Motherhood may be portrayed as a joyride, but anyone who’s experienced it knows it isn’t entirely true. More often than not, it is filled with doubt, exhaustion and confusion, and all of that can really take a toll on you both physically and mentally. If you can relate to that, here’s some help your way.
Read on to discover 6 super effective ways to recharge yourself mentally while still being the mum that you are.
Find Solitude
Once you become a mother, your individualism goes out of the window- at least until your little one becomes independent. For a new mum, this can be very challenging, and that’s exactly why you need to get those few moments of solitude every day. Make it a point to fit this into your schedule – no matter what. It can be something as simple as reading a book alone for half an hour in your yard, or sipping on a cup of coffee at the coffee shop – alone. That’s when you’ll truly understand why solitude is bliss.
Go on a Date
Parenting almost always has an impact on the couple too, and that’s exactly why you need to consciously make time for your partner. Set a date night every week, and do a little something extra to get closer to your spouse. Recharge and spend more time together. Doing this can help both of you realise that you’re more than just parents – you’re each other’s life partner too.
Rise Early
You might be taken aback with this one, but this little trick has the potential to make a huge difference in how you feel and go about your day’s tasks. Rising just 10-15 minutes earlier every day allows you to clear your head rather than just rushing around with the stuff you need to get started, helping you start your morning on a happier note. Give yourself the gift of quiet every day, preferably before you start the day. You’ll find that you’re much more grounded and calm and don’t have your emotions all over the place.
Do Nothing
At least once a week, set out some time to do nothing. Yes, that’s right. This little self-care hack can get you that little time for yourself, where you can relax, unwind and not have a ton of responsibilities and worries to tackle. Sitting down and watching the world go by or taking a long, hot soak in the bath – enjoy your time doing absolutely nothing.
Read
Reading is therapeutic. It allows you to dive into an entirely different world, and if motherhood is proving to be tough for you mentally, this one can be an excellent way to recharge yourself mentally. Pick up some good positive books, preferably fiction, and dive right into it!
Stay in Touch
Last, but definitely not least, make it a point to stay in touch with those that matter to you, and that makes you feel happy. It can be your close friends, a relative or even something that you pursued passionately before you transitioned into a mum. You’ll be surprised at how quickly this can relieve stress and make you feel more ‘sane.’
Remember, it’s not selfish to recharge yourself mentally as a mum – you can’t pour from an empty cup.
