One of the most important legal documents you will ever create is your will. It’s essential for everything from end of life planning to getting your affairs in order. Whatever you want to happen during your funeral or how you want to be buried or cremated or should be documented in your will. A strong will that is written early on is going to be one that you can rely on and soak in your family.
Making sure that you have this document in place is going to help so that nobody can really contest a will and make it known they’re unhappy. If you have your will written early and everything in place early enough, you can ensure that everything is water tight when you die. You might avoid writing a will, and there are plenty of reasons to avoid it.
Not everybody wants to have to face their mortality, and the process can be overwhelming. But when you write your will, you appoint your beneficiaries and you get to say what you want. Let’s take a look at 4 reasons you should write your will today.
Reasons you should write your will today
You won’t get what you want
If you pass away without a will firmly in place, this is actually called dying intestate. It means that your assets will be distributed by default to your family. And while that’s fine in theory, what if your family is not where you want your assets to go? You need to be able to detail what you want and if you have assets that are valuable then you want them to go to the right places. Disputes can and do happen and people do contest a will and resolving this in court can be expensive. If you make sure that you have dedicated everything you need in your will to the right people, you won’t have to worry about this.
What about your children?
If you’re a parent, you need to have a valid will in place. If you are nervous about your children going to your partner or your ex partner then you need to have it detailed where you’d like your children to be. Without a will in place, the courts won’t know who you want to raise your children for, and that can invite family members or different values to come forward and raise them in a way that you disagree with or even put your children in danger. You want to feel that Peace of Mind that you know what’s going to happen beyond your time of death.
You have assets, even if you don’t think you do
Even if you don’t own a house, there are still going to be things that you own that are of value that people will come for after you die. Insurance, cars, jewellery and special ornaments all count as assets, so even if they don’t total very much in value, you need to make sure that they are going to the right place.
It’s all your decision
The last reason to make sure that you write your will today is because it’s your decision what happens to you beyond your death. If you want to have control of that, it’s why you should write a will.
