It’s the New Year a time when we are making resolutions and also a time when we start making plans to change things within the home. From simple jobs like adding a few shelves, looking storage solutions or planning to renovate a whole room. One of the main factors on how much DIY we complete comes down to cost, something that Aldi are hoping to help banishing the blues and allow you to have a great January without breaking the bank.
During January myself and Kay Adeola Blog will be taking the Aldi Challenge to see whether we can banish the January blues whilst saving money by shopping within their upcoming Aldi Specialbuys.
Whether you love or hate DIY there are some jobs around the home that require you to have a handful of tools available. Storing said tools can be an issue however, a tool box is the obvious course but have you ever tried to fit everything back into one after you have used it the first time? it’s harder than a Rubik’s cube!
Whilst some tools you might not need to hand for the everyday use, there are some that you will need especially for any emergencies that crop up in the home – like when Roo’s radiator wouldn’t heat up, with help of the trusty universal tool (the hammer) and a YouTube video I was able to fix it without having to fork out for a plumber emergency call out fee.
How do I start to organise my tools?
In order to start organising your tools you need to think about how you currently store your tools, what works for you and which tools you use on a regular basis and the different accessories that you will need to hand.
Current storage issues
I have to confess and tell you that our household tools are currently stored in a plastic storage box in the under stairs cupboard and it does not work for us. There is no light in there for a start off so we have to store a torch on the top of the box so we can search through it to find what we need – the possibility of moving the box out into the dining room to see what I’m looking for would the be obviously solution however it just too heavy to move for just a screwdriver etc.
What tools do I use regularly?
Tools wise we always need access to screwdrivers (especially as most battery operated toys are now screwed shut so children don’t eat the batteries), a range of Allen keys as the one I find first never fits and I end up going through a whole box of tools just find the correct one.
Accessories seem to be our biggest problem, storing screws, wall plugs, picture hooks etc. I made an attempt to organise these by putting them into zip-lock freezer bags and writing on the front what size they were, however searching through the 10+ bags within the storage box is a real pain.
Quick DIY fixes for organising your tools
The best way to organise your tools is to think of them as you would your wardrobe, your children’s toys or even your work desk…
A place for everything and everything in its place
Wall mountable storage
Utilise space efficiently and organise your tools and equipment with Aldi’s sturdy Garage Shelving (the top section of the image to the left) available for £19.99. Used alongside the wall mounted Store Plus Set (the bottom section of the image to the left) available for £19.99 will clear the decks too.
The shelving is a fabulous solution to ensuring that your tools are stored correctly but also easily accessible for when you need to complete that next DIY challenge. The wall mountable system has space available for a variety of tools as well as an array of storage pots for screws, wall plugs and other bits and bobs.
Up off the floor
Brackets can be used to hang an array of accessories, fold-able workbenches are very useful whilst your doing a DIY task however storing them can a bit of a pain – why not add a couple of wall brackets and hang it up out of the way until it is needed next. Ladders, paste tables and spirit levels could also be added to brackets up on the wall out of the way. Using wall brackets helps get everything off the floor for a less cluttered garage, workshop or shed, which will help when you come to look for whichever tool you need.
Why not start the New Year with all the right gear to get your home in ship shape condition thanks to Aldi’s Workshop Specialbuys range, available in stores on 8th January.
