Even when you’re totally excited about moving into a new house, the thought of packing up your whole life into boxes can seem like a daunting task. It is, however, the perfect time to have a de-clutter and purge everything you don’t need anymore. This leads the way for a much more seamless transition and the chance to start afresh when decorating your new home. But you’ll no doubt still find yourself overwhelmed and stressed as you start trying to organise everything. From the sentimental to the necessary, it’s amazing what we accumulate over the years. So if you’re about to embark on a colossal packing up project, read on for tips on how to move like a pro.
The First Box Barrier
When you finally have your moving date, it’s a mixture of excitement and then a feeling of dread as the packing has to commence. The best thing you can do is immediately break that first box barrier. Once you’ve packed up the first box, every box afterward will feel a little easier. And start early in the weeks leading up to the big move. Packing always takes longer than you think it will. Pack smart too. Light stuff goes in big boxes, and heavy stuff goes in smaller boxes.
Essentials
Obviously packing boxes in numerous sizes and tons and tons of bubble wrap and sticky tape. It’s also a good idea to have big colour label stickers. Assign a colour to each room and stick a color label on each box that matches the room. Red for the kitchen, blue for the bedroom, etc. … This will make the movers job easier and your unpacking more effortless, as each box will land in its correct room. Also use a sharpie to give a rough idea of the contents of the box.
Organising Your Packing
The first things you should pack up are your non-essentials. And this means anything you haven’t used in the last four weeks. A couple of days before moving pack a hard side suitcase with clothing and essentials for the week ahead. And also include your valuables in here. You will want to transport the suitcases to your new house in your own car. Also get everyone to put all their cables, chargers and technology wires into one big box with a label stuck on them too. No one wants a screaming teenager whose smartphone battery has died! Obviously, save the things you use until the last minute until the very end of the packing process. And ask your movers how they will be packing and unloading. This way you can work out what’s going to be coming out first and pack accordingly. Take a photograph of the back of your TV so that you know where all the wires go again when it’s unpacked. And if you are dismantling furniture, sellotape clear bags with all the nuts and bolts to each piece.
Eliminate First Night Annoyances
Pack a big, durable plastic box with all the essentials you will need for the first night. Include a kettle, tea bags, mugs, plates, and cutlery. It will also include toothpaste, toothbrushes, toilet roll and soap. Have everyone pack their own separate suitcases with clothing and pyjamas. And another tip; always transport your toolbox in the car too. This way you’ll have easy access to it on the first night if anything goes wrong in the house.
