National Handwriting Day was started to re-introduce one’s self to a pen or pencil and a piece of paper. According to the Writing Instrument Manufacturers Association, it is a chance for all to re-explore the purity and power of handwriting.
Getting kids to write can be challenging. By teaching children early is a great way to give them a jump start into learning to write. Be sure to make handwriting fun and children will look forward to practising. Here are some top tips to teach children how to write or just improve their writing skills just in time for National Handwriting Day.
How to encourage children to write
Reading
It is important to have children see words written. Reading to children is important. Let kids look at books, magazines or even the newspaper. Keep a basket with reading books for kids to have access to.
Make Play Time Learning Time
Even playing can be a chance to learn. If you see a stop sign, talk about the letters. If there is a sign on a building, talk about what is on the sign, the letters and what the sign says. Buy letter magnets or letter puzzles. These can be fun to move around and play with for kids. Kids can learn their letters and learn how to make words using these fun toys.
Writing Tools
Let kids play with different things to write with. Most parents choose crayons or pencils but there are many things that can work. Sidewalk chalk, dot markers (like the kind used to play Bingo) and even paint brushes are great options. These things help children build up the small motor skills.
Teach the Correct Pencil Grip
Teaching kids to hold the pencil correctly can save trouble down the line. Once kids learn to hold the pencil it can be hard to reteach the correct way later. Holding the pencil the correct way also helps kids to be able to write the letters correctly.
Practice
The best way to learn how to write letters is practice. As children practice writing their letters they will get better at writing them. STABILO is a great site for helping children learn to write. It has a learning zone section on their website that offers tips and ideas to help children learn to write. There are a lot of activity sheets to download to help children practice. Starting with first shapes up to handwriting, these sheets are great practice for kids learning to write.
If your child is left-handed, they also have a great selection of left-handed stationery available to ensure that they have grip points in the correct place.
