Anyone who owns a car should know that to help the vehicle run at its best and to avoid surprise mechanic bills, you need to do routine maintenance on the car. These are simple things like oil changes and tire rotation, but it is also important to have some other routine services done on the car like tune-ups and changing filters in order to increase the life of the engine. Some people feel confident to do these types of services themselves, but for most people, this means taking the car to be serviced. Calmac Tyres offer expert car servicing in Northampton for all car models. Visit their website for more information.
Tune Up
A tune up is done about every 30,000 to 40,000 miles. Tune ups are when the mechanic looks at the engine and cleans or replaces parts that need it in order to help the car perform at optimal levels.
Fuel Injector Flush
As cars age, there can be a build up of debris in the engine. A Fuel injector flush clears out the fuel injector, valves and pistons. It will help the car get better gas mileage and run better.
Fuel Filter
Cars burn fuel in order to run. It is important to have a clean fuel filter in order to keep excess debris and particles from getting into the engine. Since fuel is a lot cleaner than it was in the past, a fuel filter change isn’t needed as often as it used to be. Whenever you get a tune-up on your car, the mechanic will often check to see if the fuel filter should be replaced.
Spark Plugs
Spark plugs are what give the engine the spark to start combustion, which means burning the gas to make the car run. If the spark plugs are worn down or not working properly, the engine can not work correctly. It could start misfiring, have a lack of power, cause the ignition coils to fail and in general give poor gas mileage. During the tune-up or engine check, the spark plugs might need to be replaced.
Air Filter
The air filter is one of the most important things to have replaced on your car. If the air filter is dirty, it will cause a strain to the engine. When it is straining, everything is working harder which means the engine is overworking, using more gas and causing parts to break down faster. An air filter is inexpensive, and it can be changed on your own, however, whenever you get an oil change, you should have the air filter changed with it.
Battery
As the battery ages, it might not hold a charge as well. This can leave you stranded somewhere with a dead battery. If the battery is not holding a charge or seems like it is failing, it is time to get it replaced. During an engine check, mechanics will usually test to see how much life is left in the battery.
Other things that get checked
During these checks, mechanics will usually check belts and hoses. They check fluid levels. They will also be on the lookout for anything that seems old, worn and runs the risk of failing soon. The point of the engine check is to get the vehicle running at its optimal level and to hopefully avoid being stranded on the side of the road during a vehicle breakdown.
