As you know, I love makeup. For me there is nothing better than bringing back a new haul, sitting down and working out different ways to use what I have just bought to create new looks.
When it comes to makeup, I am learning all of the time. Just when I think I have seen it all, a new product is released or I find a new way to apply a product. Often, these simple changes produce startling results.
Despite the fact that I am constantly learning I am always looking for new ways to learn more. The other day I found this makeup artist Manchester website, and it got me thinking. It struck me that these are the true experts, not the assistant at the department store or the girls sharing makeup tips on YouTube, although I really enjoy these videos.
Makeup Inspiration from the Professionals
Getting inspiration from MAU websites
MAU’s spend all day, making people from all walks of life look their best. I started wondering how I could tap into that expertise.
An obvious approach was to visit a few makeup artist websites and see what advice they offered. Unfortunately, in most cases, there was not much to see. Understandably, most makeup artists see their website only as a marketing tool. There is plenty of inspiration on them in the form of before and after shots, but not much in the way of advice, so that avenue was a bit of a bust.
Makeup artist inspiration from YouTube
Next, I tried YouTube. There I got far better results. Of course, the vast majority of the videos were posted by bloggers like me. Many of them were excellent, but not really, what I was looking for. After all, my aim was to find inspiration from professionals rather than amateurs.
In the end, I did find some quite good ones. Perhaps my favourite was a channel run by a make makeup artist. He uploads videos at least twice a week, so there is usually something fresh to see. Unfortunately, most of his videos are reviews, but he does use what he buys to demonstrate application techniques.
Sometimes he uses one of his clients, and occasionally he is the model. That is a bit weird at first, but you soon forget you are watching a dude putting makeup on, and start to pick up some great tips. You can watch him here. So, it turns out that YouTube is one way to tap into the extensive experience of makeup artists, but I still wanted more.
Real life tutoring
The answer came to me while I was talking to a friend about her wedding. She had hired a makeup artist. When she told me that, it suddenly struck me that the best way to tap into a makeup artists experience was to book an appointment with one.
It turns out that if you ask most MAUs will meet with you on a consultative basis and give you advice about how to change your look, which products to use, and how to apply them. For me, that sounds like the best way ever to really learn and get answers to those questions you have had for years. If you book your appointment before a big party, you will go to it looking fantastic, and having learnt a huge amount about makeup and what works for you.
