How to Look After Your Eyes

Many people who have never had to deal with any serious complications with their vision or eyesight might fall foul of neglecting to proactively care for their eyes. However, neglecting your eyes can be a big mistake, especially if your family history indicates that you might be genetically prone to vision loss or a specific eye condition.

Thankfully, there are a fair few things that you can do and steps you can take to look after your eyes and keep them as healthy as possible. Ultimately, you will want to make some mindful changes and make sure that you give your precious eyes their due respect.

With that in mind, here are a few things that you can do to take better overall care of your eyes.

Take a Break from Lenses

Contact lenses can be a great way to correct your vision without being encumbered by glasses. They are particularly helpful if you lead an active lifestyle that isn’t quite conducive to keeping glasses on your face. Moreover, many people simply like the way they look without glasses. Whatever your reasons are for choosing contact lenses, you must take care not to wear them for too long.

Most eye experts recommend that you cap your contact usage at 8 hours per day. This is because soft contact lenses block the flow of oxygen to your eyes. Since your cornea is the only part of your body that gets its oxygen directly from the air, this can be problematic. Your eyes will eventually try to compensate for the lack of oxygen by growing additional blood vessels. If left unchecked, this can lead to some serious potential issues, not excluding the risk of losing your vision.

Make sure that you stick to a strict schedule with your contact usage. You should always look to replace lenses according to the manufacturer’s guidelines and never sleep in your lenses. Many people find it helpful to switch to one-a-day lenses like Precision One so that they can give their eyes a much-needed break a few days a week.

Never Skip a Check-Up

Unless you are experiencing some specific discomfort or blurriness of vision, you might find it easy to skip your routine eye check-up. After all, if nothing seems wrong, then all is likely well, right? While this might be the case, you may be surprised to learn that some eye conditions can begin to develop virtually unnoticed.

For instance, if you are an avid wearer of contact lenses, you might have no indication at all that you are depriving your eyes of the oxygen they need. Only a doctor can detect such things with a proper examination.

Several other eye conditions, including glaucoma, can cause you to lose your vision without even realising it. This is because the vision loss caused by such conditions is so gradual that you might not detect that it is happening at all. Make sure that you respect your eyes enough to have them checked by a physician on a routine basis.
