Oh, my! Check out these glorious temps! We’re really winning with the weather this year. It’s been hot for, what, let’s say almost three months here in the UK. And let’s be honest, it’s not the kind of climate we’re accustomed too. A dip in temps as school ended got us thinking we’d seen the best of the British summer before the holidays hit, but that just isn’t the case. The sun’s still beaming and our summer time’s gleaming.
Which can only mean one thing… it’s picnic season, right?
A good old picnic in the park never truly does grow old. But, that doesn’t mean to say you can’t shake things up to keep the children interested. After all, picnics are budget-friendly, out in the open, alfresco family fun. Let’s make the most of this truly Great British summer and keep picnic ideas innovative and exciting.
Life’s A Picnic Hamper
Life’s a picnic so grab the picnic hamper, that’s prefilled with plates, cutlery, and glasses so it’s one less thing to pack. Then fill up the cool bag section with some delicious treats. Take a look at these four fabulous ideas for summer school holiday picnics your little ones will love.
Hit the beach
Who says picnics are all about gardens and grass? Forget the fields and choose sand instead. Team up a day at the beach with butties, crisps and other favourite snacks. Entertainment will sure be easy to find. With a bucket and spade in hand, the beach is every parent’s best friend. Cost-free fun for hours on end, courtesy of waves, sand castles and shell treasure hunts.
Woodland walks
There’s something oh-so enchanting about woodland walks. Extend your day with picnic interval. Set up your blanket amidst the acorns and the oak trees. Don’t forget the fairy fancy dress. Perhaps even a Gruffalo onesie.
Yes, a Gruffalo. Why didn’t you know?
To make the day extra interesting, look for any clues fairies and elves have left behind. They just love the natural wildlife and are best friends with local creatures. You’ll definitely be able to find an eye-spy list online for your youngsters to check off as they go.
Teddy Bears Picnic
Pack up Winnie The Pooh and his friends, along with some picnic treats and head to the park. If you’ve got a gingham blanket all the better. Bears just love marmalade sandwiches, FYI. Just ask Paddington. Take some picture books, a bear headband, maybe even paint your face with a cunning button-nose disguise.
And this a theme to be truly opened minded about. If your children are beyond a traditional Teddy Bears Picnic, get creative! Recreate Toy Story’s afternoon tea with Mrs Nesbitt (AKA Buzz Lightyear), Woody and the gang. Take a bucketful of dinosaurs and have an awesome expedition complete with lava juice and Jurassic jam sandwiches. Heck, bring along Batman for a Gotham City Joker mission over summer fruits and meringue.
A ride on Aladdin’s Carpet
Of course, at some point, this wonderful weather must cease. We will, once again, spend days upon days watching the rain pour down outside our windows. But that shouldn’t stop the picnic fun.
After all, your living room carpet was once used by Aladdin to fly through the Arabian skies. Create a fantastic feast fit for a genie and a princess, and dine together from the comfort of your own home, before enjoying a Walt Disney classic.
