Throughout my childhood and my teenage years I was an avid reader. I can remember requesting books from the library to make sure I had read the entire series of Point Romance books before moving on to the next collection that made me want to finish the book rather than put it down.
Since leaving school, and well life happening I don’t read half as often as once did and in many way I miss it. I suppose that movies have now taken over my reading obsession. Although in my heart I still long for the page turners that I once read.
This week’s Listography from Kate Takes 5 is all about sharing the books that have been in our lives for one reason or another.
The Worst Witch by Jill Murphy
The original ‘Harry Potter’ series for my childhood years. I can remember reading and re-reading this collection time and time again. The series follows Mildred Hubbles who manages to find herself in some witchcraft disasters. In fact we bought Santa brought the collection for Roo this Christmas so that tales of Mildred can be passed down a generation.
Across The Barricades by Joan Lingard
One of the few books that I had to read for school that I actually enjoyed. The powerful journey of two teenagers who just want to be together but living in Northern Ireland and coming from different religions it complicates things.
Someone Else’s Baby by Geraldine Kaye
This is a book from my teenage years, one of the many ‘Point’ series books that I read. Whilst many of the other books were about the joys of teenage love this book is about a sixteen year old girl who finds herself pregnant. The story follows her documenting her struggle, her options and is truly heartbreaking. The last time I read this book has to be a good 15 years ago and it is still a book that I often think about.
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
Without a shadow of a doubt this is the one book that I always fall back to (although I do love the BBC TV series of the book). I love everything about it, no matter how many times I read those words it feels like I am reading them for the first time. I still get goose-pimples whenever Darcy declares his love for Elizabeth and she refuses him. Mr Boo bought me a really lovely leather hardbook edition with all seven of Jane Austen’s books in it for our wedding anniversary last year, it makes reading it that bit more special.
