Make Every Day A Learning Experience {Part 2}

June 17, 2019

This is a gifted partnership

Kids need to continue to learn during the summer. But since it is summer, kids don’t want to be taught. The best way to get kids learning is to get them learning without them knowing that they are learning. I recently shared ideas to get kids learning, reading and exploring in the other article about making every day a learning experience. Here are more ways to get kids learning…

Kids are active during the summer. Whether you are spending your time at the beach, poolside, at a lake or even just a park, there are so many things that can be used as learning experiences for kids.

At the beach: Have kids look for different types of shells. Bring the shells home to see what kind they are. Talk about where that animal lived in the ocean, what layer and what it is like in that part of the ocean. Kids can draw pictures of the animal or the ocean.

At the Pool: How long can you hold your breath underwater? Why is it hard to sit at the bottom of the pool? Why is the water clear but it is hard to see when you open your eyes underwater? What does chlorine do in a pool? Why is it easier to do a handstand in the pool but hard on land? These kinds of things get kids excited because not only are they getting hands-on experience, it will be something that comes to mind every time they are at the pool.

At the Lake:  What type of animals live in the lake? What type of water is in the lake? Is it a natural lake or man-made? Just like at the beach see what type of shells or stones you can find and have the kids find out what it is.

At the Park: Have the kids look around. What can they see? What type of trees are around? Are the leaves different from one tree to another? Are there birds in the trees? Are the bird’s camouflaged? A great way to help kids see the leaves and the birds and anything else that might be around the park is to use Discovery Binoculars. The binoculars are made for kids ages 5 and up. Since they are made for kids, they are built sturdier than the adult versions. These binoculars feature 6x magnification and 35mm objective lenses. The field of vision is adjustable, and it has a build in compass in front of the eyepiece. With a plastic carry case and a strap to hold them, these binoculars are perfect for kids.

As kids explore, make it a learning experience. It will keep them from the summer slide and you might just find a new passion for learning in your child.
