Kitchen Design Ideas – Inspiration and Tips

February 26, 2018

Thomas Edison said that genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration, which means that an idea may come easily to you but carrying out the plan takes hard work. The same can be said for designing a kitchen space. There are nearly endless kitchen design ideas, but the execution is where most of the kitchen renovation work happens. And that’s where these tips come in.

Choosing the Style

The first thing to think about is what style you want for your kitchen. Some kitchen design ideas are country, modern, and urban. For a country-style kitchen, you will probably want a soft, homey look. Consider a completely white kitchen with light wood accents. A more modern kitchen will have stainless steel appliances and sink. And an urban kitchen has black-coloured, shiny countertops and dramatic paint colours. Whichever style you choose, there are several elements to take into consideration to increase functionality.

Kitchen Island Tips

For your kitchen island, decide whether you want seating or not. Bar stools can make an island as useful as a kitchen table. Another option is to divide your island into two levels—one side that is countertop height and the other side that is low enough for seating with regular chairs. Another idea is to add a kitchen sink or cooktop into your island to increase efficiency. All of these considerations will have to fit in your budget and space limitations, of course.

Kitchen Storage Tips

Storage space in the kitchen carries the most importance in deciding how to carry out your kitchen renovation. Hopefully, you have a good grasp of what your storage needs are and can visualise how you want your small appliances, crockery, and pots and pans to be stored. Think about a pantry if you have the space for it, because it will allow you to shop for more and keep staples on hand, increasing efficiency and saving money.

Kitchen Colour Tips

The kitchen colour is a personal preference; consider that lighter coloured paint can make a smaller kitchen seem larger while a bright colour can set off more simply-coloured countertops or cabinetry. A good idea is to choose neutral colours for most of the kitchen and then add a splash of a bright or dramatic colour as a focal point.

Whatever kitchen design ideas you find whilst doing your research, take all these tips into consideration, and you are sure to have the dream kitchen you always wanted.
