As I applied for my maternity leave last year, I completed the relevant forms and sent off my MAT B1 form to my human resources department. As it was processed I was sent a letter stating the start date of my maternity and also the end date. In accordance with our maternity policy, I am required to send a letter eight weeks before my maternity leave end date to inform them of my intention to return to work following maternity leave.
That time has now come, I have just typed out my letter. Detailed that I will be returning to my post, with the same working days, the same hours and the same base. However, I’m not. I’m in limbo like I have been for my entire maternity leave. I have no role to return to, the post I held is ‘non-existent’ and despite my best efforts, I don’t feel as though I am any closer to finding out whether I am going to be made redundant or they have found me a new position that is working the same hours, T&Cs etc. as my old role.
I’ve decided that if I don’t hear anything within a week that I am going to take the matter further and get my union to step up the pressure. If I am to return to work I need to arrange childcare, sort out school runs etc. these things do not happen overnight and I need as much notice as possible.
Not sure how I feel about it all. I’m stressed and annoyed by being strung out for so long. I’m sad that my fantastic ward has closed and that I will not be returning to my family of colleagues some of whom I’d worked with for many years.
But my intention to return to work following maternity leave letter is written, folded and placed in an envelope awaiting a stamp.
