Improving Your Home Water Supply

You’ve worked hard to create a safe home for your family. And making sure your family remains healthy is one of your top priorities. Providing clean and safe water for your family to drink contributes to their health. You can get better water by improving the quality of water in your home.

1. Use Cold Water for Drinking and Cooking

Cold tap water is better than hot tap water for cooking and drinking. The heat from hot water dissolves contaminants present in the water heater. As a result, your hot water could contain metal, bacteria, or sediment. That’s not a huge problem for a quick bath or shower, but it’s not recommended for ingesting.

2. Invest in a Filtration System

Water filtration removes impurities from tap water. A whole-house filtration system filters all the water in your home. Having one installed is not a simple task, as this type of system is connected to the main water supply line. Whether it’s residential filtration systems in San Diego, Sussex, or somewhere else on earth, homeowners need special plumbing skills to get the job done right on their own. A professional installer can do the job for you the right way.

3. Replace Old Pipes

Home plumbing decays, corrodes, and rusts with time. The older your water pipes, the more likely they are to affect the quality of your water. Depending on when your home was built, you also may have lead pipes.

Lead pipes can last up to 100 years, but they pose a health hazard. Lead from the pipes can seep into your drinking water. The US banned lead pipes in 1986, but homes built prior to this ban could still have them installed. Replacing old pipes with a lead-free alternative is a wise decision.

4. Clean the Faucet Aerator

A faucet aerator is usually located on the tip of an indoor water faucet. It’s a small metal piece that’s screwed onto the head of the faucet. The aerator has a screen that allows water to exit the faucet in a non-splashing stream. But the aerator screen can become clogged with metals and sediment. Occasionally clean the faucet aerator to keep the screen free of debris.

5. Flush the Pipes in the Morning

Faucet water quality can decline if the tap hasn’t been used in several hours. That means after a night of sleep, your water quality is probably not the best.

Run the cold water tap for at least two minutes before using the water for cooking or drinking. An alternative is to flush the pipes via other means. Activities such as doing laundry, showering, using the dishwasher, or flushing the toilet can get water flowing through the pipes.

6. Use a Water Filter Pitcher

A water filter pitcher works like a regular water pitcher, except it contains a filter. The filter removes chemicals, pesticides, micro-organisms, and other harmful substances from the water. This option doesn’t affect all the water in your home, but it does provide filtered water for drinking and cooking.

Healthy Water for Your Family

Clean drinking water contributes to a healthy household. It’s possible that you’re fine with the water provided by your local water plant. But if you’re not, realize that there are ways to improve water quality. Choose the method that’s best for you and give it a try.
