How to Make Your New House a Home by Using Accessories

June 18, 2018

It isn’t hard to find stylish accessories and unique additions for your home, especially when there are so many stores offering these must-have accents. But how do you use these accessories to create maximum impact in your home?

Thankfully, many new build homes offer you the perfect blank canvas to get to work with these homely accessories – and here are some of the best places to start:

Room and Curtain

Cushions and Throws

One of the easiest ways to inject new life and colour into a room is to buy new throws and cushions. An affordable type of accessory, these allow you to change up your look as frequently as you wish, regularly altering the look and feel of a room.

So with the neutral space, you’re perhaps working within your new home, get to work with vibrant throws and cushions. Some of my favourites include mustards and greys (which are really on-trend) or for a more dramatic look, plum and turquoise work a treat.

Window Dressings

To soften edges and create another layer of design, nothing works better than curtains. Made to complement the other colours you’re introducing in the room, these can add a really impactful look to the space. Or, if you want to keep things a little more contemporary and understated, blinds may be the ideal option. Kitchen Home agreed adding “You also want to consider practicality of it, blinds can offer some privacy whilst also letting light in if its a public facing winding whereas curtains are either open or closed.”

Change Like the Seasons

It’s also important to understand that your interior space needs to adapt to the season. What the weather’s doing outside can have a huge impact on how a room feels in your home.

For example, if it’s hot outside, a rustic, cosy design might make you feel stuffy, while a cooler, minimalistic design will be much more in keeping with the weather – and vice versa.

This also gives you the perfect excuse to change your accessories every time the summer or winter arrives. Just make sure you’re utilising all your space by putting these accessories at various heights. For example, new picture frames on the sideboard, a rug on the floor and some cushions on the chair.

Also, I’m not suggesting you throw out your accessories twice a year – rather, put some in storage and mix and match with new pieces every time you feel the need to revamp your home.

Finish with Art

Finally, no room is complete without some artwork that reflects the mood of the space you’re trying to create. Find something that really captures your attention and hang it up in a prominent place (above your sofa or bed, for example). This can become a timeless piece that works with your changing accessories over the coming years.
