Halloween is only a few short weeks away. So many parents out there will be having a bit of a panic about how to celebrate the holiday. As autumn has officially started it’s the perfect time to do some Halloween-inspired activities that the whole family can get involved in. Especially as the weather can either be great or particularly rubbish at this time of year.
Halloween isn’t a holiday that everyone embraces. I can understand that. Ghosts and ghouls aren’t for everyone. But controlling the situation and making it fun that the whole family can be part of is a great way to celebrate the holiday. Without doing the normal mundane things. With that in mind, I thought it would be a great idea to share with you some Halloween inspired ideas. I hope you have fun with them.
It is all about the sweets
I get it! Halloween can have much focus on the sweets and treats that you get which makes it all part of the fun for the kids. However, being organised for those trick or treaters turning up on your doorstep is important. Having a good stock of sweets to hand out is a great way to encourage the Halloween spirit within the community. You could also order some sweet boxes for your kids if you are not so keen on them knocking on too many doors. This could be a great compromise for them and you could have a lot of fun with the order you make.
Create costumes for everyone instead of buying them
Creating a Halloween costume from scratch may fill you with dread. Not everyone is a whizz at the sewing machine or has fantastic creative ideas for amazing costumes. But, we live in the modern age where the internet is rife with inspiration on websites like Pinterest. Often with a step-by-step guide on how to create those costumes. So there is no excuse. Plus it is something the whole family can get involved in.
From deciding on what Halloween costumes you are going to make to finding the materials to create them. It can pass the time of day and be a creative activity the whole family will love. You could even take it one step further and have a theme for the family and be coordinated.
Consider throwing a Halloween party
If you don’t like the idea of leaving your home on Halloween then why not throw a party instead? This is then celebrating the holiday completely on your terms. You could make it child-friendly or if you prefer to make it a real adult affair where you get to celebrate in style. There are so many things you could do. Of course, decorating your home and getting dressed up is a must. But think of the options when it comes to food and drink.
Placing an order with an online sweet shop and having some lively themed foods for the table as well could help to ensure that you put on a great spread. It could be so much fun to have a safe and fun environment that families can come together to enjoy and embrace Halloween.
Decorate the house with autumn and Halloween inspired items
If you don’t want to go all the way to throwing a party, then don’t let that stop you from decorating your home. It’s still a great way to celebrate and talk to your children about the holiday and autumn period. You could decorate your homes with pumpkin carvings, for example. There are some great tutorials online that will guide you on the best way to do it. You could also consider decorating your home with Halloween-inspired bunting or even some arts and crafts.
Bake up some treats with a Halloween theme
A great family activity is baking. So why not use the Halloween-inspired idea and create some perfect sweet and savoury treats in the kitchen? From Halloween Rice Krispie cakes to ghostly biscuits. There is something to suit all tastes. Plus children love an excuse to get their hands dirty in the kitchen. You could stick with something traditional and create Halloween cupcakes with tasty marshmallow fondant. Pumpkins are in season at this time of the year so you may want to take advantage of this ingredient and create things like pumpkin pies or soups. Perfect for the colder weather ahead.
Go trick or treating with local neighbours and friends
Trick or treating isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, I admit. It may often leave you with disgruntled neighbours and a huge sugar rush from the kids. But it doesn’t have to be this way. If you organised the trick or treating, then you could have a pleasant evening all around. Get together with a few neighbours in similar situations to you and decide on a system.
You could then post a little note through every door you had planned to knock on a few days in advance. Ask them to politely display a token, which will be included with the note. This could be a balloon or even a piece of ribbon. Ask them to place it somewhere it can be seen. Maybe on the door or gate. That way you know that they are happy for you to knock on their door. Then you simply ignore the houses that have decided to not take part. The children can all come together at the end and share their treats with each other. Happy parents, neighbours, and children all in one fail swoop.
I hope this has inspired you to have some fun this Halloween.
