As a child, I can always remember my mum having her Singer sewing machine out to fix our clothes or make something new for us. With her amazing skills, she made the first holy communion dress that my sister and I wore. As well many Christmas and fancy dress costumes over the years. My teachers at my primary school would often ask her to complete projects for plays, activities and such like.
Having watched her sewing over the years, it is something that I have also enjoyed. Although, I have to confess that I a) don’t have amazing skills like my mum and b) rarely find the time to pull out the sewing machine to complete projects. And I’m a little sad to say that whilst Roo loves watching the Great British Sewing Bee on TV it is down to Magic Nanny inspiring her with her skills rather than myself. Something that I was set to change so the Great British Sewing Bee Sewing Studio has been the perfect way to get behind the sewing machine together.

Great British Sewing Bee Sewing Studio // Using the machine
Unboxing and setting up the sewing machine is really straightforward. The instruction booklet included guides you through threading the machine and needle and how to wind a bobbing. As well as pointing out all the key features on the machine from how to switch from forward to reverse. Raising and lowering the foot pedal and the different sewing speeds. The machine itself comes with helpful prompts so that you are not reliant on the instruction booklet time and time again. From which way the thread needs to be threaded, to the helpful seam allowance guide line.
Once set up you are ready to complete your first project of the clutch bag included within the Great British Sewing Bee Sewing Studio. Whilst completing your project you have the option to use the foot pedal included or the button located on the machine. One of the things I feel is missing from the instructions is to manually place the needle into the fabric before you start sewing. This is something that I was always told to complete so is something that I have passed on to Roo whilst she was completing the project.
Great British Sewing Bee Sewing Studio // Clutch Bag Sewing Project
To get you started with the GB Sewing Bee Machine the Sewing Studio includes a clutch bag sewing project. Complete with instructions, pattern, fabric, scissors, and accessories. The step by step instructions guides you through the sewing process. I would advise reading through the instructions before you start as the process is not in quite the order I would have completed the project in.
It is also worth noting that the instructions show that fabric included is a rectangle and how to layout the pattern included. However, the fabric we received was a square which meant that we could not lay out the pieces as shown. As well as not being able to match the pattern on the bag and flap. Which is why we have a polka dot bag and checked flap, rather than the other way around as it did not look right.
Also whilst completing step 7 you are sewing through a number of fabric layers, so we found it easier to use the button on the machine rather than the foot pedal with us manually twist the needle control on the right-hand side to give the machine a helping hand.
Great British Sewing Bee Sewing Studio // Our thoughts…
Overall, both Roo and I are enjoying using the Great British Sewing Bee Sewing Studio. I think it helps that a project was included within the box so that you are able to get on and practice straightaway. As well as additional patterns and packs being available separately which can make great Christmas and birthday gift ideas. It is a great starter sewing machine which aids children in gaining confidence with sewing before moving onto a more powerful machine for bigger projects.
