Having good teeth is very important. You only get one set of adult teeth, so you really need to look after them and teach your kids to do the same. When you do take proper care of them, they can literally last a lifetime. Making it easier for you to continue to eat a healthy diet and stay fit and healthy well into old age.

But, it is not enough to simply go to the dentist once a year and brush your teeth. Even the best dentist in Weybridge, or your local town will not be able to keep your teeth healthy if you do not play your part. After all, most years, you will only see them once. You are the true guardian of your teeth and those of your children. At least while they are still young.

You really need to take that responsibility seriously and avoid making the following, common, mistakes.

Not flossing

According to the latest data, only 31% of the population regularly flosses. This is bad news because the plaque and bacteria that live between your teeth are what do most of the damage.

Not brushing your tongue

You also need to brush your tongue every time you brush your teeth. It is home to very high levels of bacteria. Letting these organisms build up too much in your mouth can lead to bad breath and other issues.

Not changing everyone’s toothbrushes often enough

The only way to get your teeth and mouth properly clean is to use a good toothbrush. If the bristles are bent, or missing, they will not make proper contact with the surface of your teeth, making it impossible to clean your teeth properly.

Not picking up on the early signs of gum disease

Tooth decay is not the number one reason people lose their teeth, gum disease is. When your gums become infected, your teeth loosen. This makes it easier for plaque and bacteria to get in and attack your tooth from the root up.

Receding gums mean loser teeth. This makes eating far harder. Plus, over time they become so lose that they just fall out.

Encourage everyone to brush their gums and keep an eye out for blood in their spit. Flossing properly also helps to keep gum disease at bay.

Not having your teeth straightened

It is tempting not to have your teeth straightened, especially if you are not that worried about how they look. But, there are several good health-related reasons for you to do so.

At the top of the list is the fact that straight teeth are far easier to keep clean than crowded or crooked ones are. It is virtually impossible to clean properly between teeth that are touching or overlap. If you want to learn more about other bad dental habits people in the UK have, click through to read the government report that covers the subject, in more detail.
