2021 is upon us and it’s time to start thinking about how you want the year to look. Pandemic aside, how do you want this year to go for you and your family? We can’t see the future, so we have to make lists and build castles in the sky and just hope that we get it right. This could be the year that you go back to school and study something new. It could be the year that you (maybe) book that holiday of a lifetime. Either way, a new year is like a blank page in a book: ready to be written. You have the pen, and you are in control.
Maybe this is the year you make personal decisions that positively influence your life. Maybe you lose some weight and feel fantastic in your clothes. This could be the year that you take up a hobby and get really great at it. This could be the year that you are finally brave enough to call in the divorce solicitors and start the proceedings to get your life back.
Going a new way
If you’re happy in your life right now, the changes you make could be spiritual; perhaps you start meditating and feeling well deep within yourself. If you do decide to go a new way this year, you need to think about the impact that decision will have on the kids. You want them to remain happy and whole, but you deserve to be happy, too. Here’s how to balance doing a new way without affecting your children.
- In The Dark. If you’re planning to leave your spouse and change your life this year, keep the kids out of it and in the dark: at least until you have a plan in place. There’s too much of a risk of hurt and pain to put them anywhere near your marital woes. Keep the kids away from it and they will be able to maintain healthy relationships as they get older.
- Share The Good. If you have some exciting goals for your life, you can share these ones! Children need to see you achieve to be able to craft their own inspiration and future. They’ll see you doing something amazing and achieving what you want to achieve, and they’ll want to imitate that in its entirety. When it comes to positive changes this year, let the kids see you do it right and they’ll be paying attention. Children watch everything and this is no different!
- Talk To Yourself. When you are making big changes, you have to be your own cheerleader. Talk yourself through the changes that you want to make in your life and for each new idea, write a list of pathways to get what you want. You can have anything in the world, but you have to be willing to reach out and grab it with both hands. Don’t be afraid of any changes – good or bad – as they all help you to grow as a person!
Choose your children first – it’s the only thing that matters right now.
