It’s that magical time of year when we decorate our homes, gardens, and workplaces to celebrate the festive season. Whilst I start my Christmas shopping earlier every year, it is the putting up of the Christmas tree that really starts the countdown to the big day. The tree marks the start of the advent calendars, the school plays, carol concerts and getting the finishing touches for loved ones presents.
As you come to put up the Christmas decorations this year, I want you to take a look at the Christmas tree. Do you keep to the same theme every year? Do you mix and match to include a mixture of old and new decorations? Have you ever considered what you include on your Christmas tree?
Lights
There are three main decisions when it comes to lights for the Christmas tree; no lights, multicoloured lights, or single coloured lights. Personally, I do feel that you need some lights on their even if it is just a light scattering of them in the background to highlight the decorations.
Depending on your theme or the look that you wish to achieve will come down to your lights choice. A multifunctional light strand will cover whether you opt to have them on all the time, flashing, dancing or slowly fading. This can help achieve different moods for the room too, with the chasing, flashing and dancing option saved for the children. With the softer options when you are chilling out after a busy day.
Decorations
Christmas trees from my childhood were a random affair, with a mixture of old and new ornaments scattered across it with no rhyme or reason to it. Nowadays Christmas decorations are available in different colours and themes to enable you to match your home colour scheme.
Whether you opt for the traditional red, green and gold look or prefer a modern look of silvers, blue and purples there is a great selection of ornaments to include on the tree. From baubles, snowflakes, candy canes and cute little animals.
Tinsel or Garland
Tinsel is a controversial Christmas decoration, for some they love it and believe that you can never have too much of it. Whereas others believe that it can look tacky so prefer to opt for the traditional garland on their trees. Whichever camp you fall into, remember that everything in moderation will work best.
Tree Topper
Growing up my Mam always placed a snowman that was made by her Granny on the top of the Christmas tree. However, a snowman does seem like an unlikely choice, given that angels, stars, and snowflakes seem to be the popular choice available in stores. A tree topper, however, is something that will be the crowning glory to your Christmas tree so finding the right one is important.
Christmas Tree Skirt
The bottom of the tree is often forgotten, after all, it will soon be covered in lots of lovely presents and gifts. However, adding a Christmas tree skirt will complete the look of your tree and when all the presents have been opened and the tree is standing proudly in the corner, it will still look beautiful with the stand and cables hidden by the tree skirt.
