When I think back to my childhood dreams of what job I wanted to do when I grew up. Then compare it to the one I ended up with, they are somewhat worlds apart. Whilst I had a fleeting passion for being a nurse as my mum had been a student nurse before she had myself and my siblings. The thought of all the blood and vomit soon put me off. It was the armed forces that I was destined for. Although I had originally fancied the idea of being part of the military police it was the Royal Logistic Corps with all the big tanks and machinery that caught my eye.
I started studying engineering at college ready to join up, however, it was not meant to be. Needing to get a job to pay a mortgage I worked in a few places before starting my life working for the NHS. At first in the kitchens, then on to the finance department – somewhat of a job change but you don’t use many brain cells buttering bread all day. Suddenly I found myself in an office environment, which in many ways became the perfect role for me. I’ve always had a stationery addiction and a lust for things to be organised.
After getting married I made the move from a hospital office setting to a community-based clinic which came with its own set of challenges. Unfortunately, the area was full of office hazards such as wires trailing under the desk space, the monitor was squeezed under the counter so not at a good working height and plug sockets were a rarity so everything was plugged into extension leads. Thankfully after highlighting the risks they made sure that all the changes required were made. With adequate sockets installed, a new area added so that computer work could be carried out at the correct height and ducting stalled for all wires.
Nowadays I work from home and have an office area set up in the corner of our bedroom. Sitting here looking at the piles of things underneath the desk and the extension lead trailing from the side… I really need to reassess my work area and make a few changes to it ASAP!
