When I was a child I can remember enjoying playing a variety of games either at home or when I went to my grandparents house. There always seemed to be time for another game. Now that I have children of my own I want them to share some of the same memories that I have about coming together and enjoying a family game or two. The excitement of winning, the taking it on the chin when you lose and the laughter from everyone joining in.
Family games every house should own
With so many different games to choose from I wanted to share with you the family games every house should own…
Bingo
This is hands down (our should that be eyes down – like what I did there?) our family favourite game. Ever since I was a little girl I can remember playing Bingo with my Mam and at my Grandparents house.
It can get quite competitive at times especially when you are sitting there waiting for one number to come out.
Monopoly
You can’t beat the classic game of Monopoly, taking it in turns to make your way around the board buying property, dodging jail and trying to avoid paying community chest and chance fees.
With Junior versions also available it means that all the family is able to join in and see if they can make their fortune.
Snakes and Ladders
This has to be the game which my children find the funniest to play especially which myself, no matter how many times I play it I always manage to get so far before heading down the biggest snake on the board – much to the delight of the children.
A simple roll the dice game that will have every trying to gain by dashing up ladders and avoid the slithering snakes.
Cards
Ever since I was a little girl I can remember watching my Granny playing cards at the kitchen table, she would show me how to play Solitaire, Rummy, Pontoon and attempt to get me to understand Hearts but to this day I still don’t get it.
Cards are such an easy game to pull out whether you’re at home or out about in the car or on the train. A simple game of snap or pairs can pass the time away without you even noticing.
Connect 4
The simple game of lining up four of your counters in a line but very competitive it will have you trying to out manoeuvre each other in a bid to Connect 4 first.
Young and old are able to enjoy this classic game, will it be a red or yellow victory?
