Here is your guide to dressing your windows and making them a feature in any room.
Let’s be honest, a window is like the eyes of a room. They are what you can see out of, and of course, they let the light in. They can be huge features of any room, but they can also be small and nondescript. It all depends on which room the window falls in. However, many people don’t make more of their windows. They are just seen as a drab feature. They can actually be a great design element of any room when done properly.
Dressing a window can be just as much fun as designing any other part of the room. A window can become a huge feature and showcase elements of space without being too over the top. However, the problem is, how exactly do you dress a window? I thought I would share with you some top tips on how to make more of your windows in your home. Here is your guide to dressing your windows and making them a feature in any room.
Give them a clean
Cleaning windows is never an easy household job to take on. Not only is the exterior side hard to do but you also need to ensure the interior is cleaned regularly as well. Depending on where you live many people take up the services of a window cleaner. Who takes care of the exterior of their property, but you still have no choice but to dust down the interior side. However, you won’t believe the difference it can make. One glance at your windows and you may think they don’t need doing, but trust me the difference it can make is amazing.
If you have a lot of windows to tackle in your home try and pace them out over a few days. It is, thankfully, a job that you don’t need to do as regularly. As the days get brighter, and the sun shines through them, you will notice if they are not clean. Plus the more natural light your window can bring in, the better it is for designing the space in the room.
Replace them with energy-saving alternatives
When was the last time your windows were replaced? Whether they are double glazed or not you may want to consider updating them if they are more than ten years old. This is because there are more improved windows released that are great energy savers. As much as it is an investment now, it could save you a whole heap of cash on your energy bills. Plus replacing them gives you a chance to maybe change the way your windows look.
Change the style of your window
Some homes have modern windows with UPVC frames in white, and while they can be energy-saving and safe, you can still change the style. You could look at changing the colour of the frames to add a bit of drama. Most people consider doing this on the exterior, but you could also do this for the inside as well. Especially on larger windows which could add more drama to a room. If they are wooden frames, why not regloss them? Bright white or even a different colour could add zest back into the window area.
Paint the sills
Another thing you could do would be to paint the window sills. Again the standard traditional look would be a gloss white, but you could actually paint them a different colour to match a wall colour or a theme. Or even the same colour as what the window frames are. This is a great way to create a feature out of your window space.
Dress them to go with the style of your room
Many people are quite happy to design their whole room making changes to colour schemes and updating furniture. But the windows can be a lost entity within any design plan. This is where so many people go wrong. A window can be a dramatic feature, and it just needs you to take the time to dress them appropriately to match the decor. You could consider curtains or blinds. There are some great curtain fabric options you could choose from. Or consider something more modern like wooden blinds. The options are endless just don’t forget to include them in any interior decoration.
Create a feature out of the window wall
The window is the main attraction here, but when designing rooms many people consider having feature walls. But it isn’t often that you choose the wall that has the window. So why not go against the grain and make a feature wall out of the wall that showcases your window? The window frames and window sill could be part of the feature and be painted in the same colour, or you could paint them a different colour so they really stand out. Make the other walls in the room a more neutral tone and all of a sudden your window is the feature.
Add things to the window sill
Another great way to dress your window is to add things to the window sill. You don’t want to add too much to it as it can be overwhelming, but a few pictures and accessories that you can add to the window sill can make such a difference to how your room looks. It can be a great area to display things in your room and make the most of the space you had.
Make more use of natural light
Finally, the last thing you should consider is making more use of your natural light. It’s all well and good dressing your windows, but you do need to enable them to do their job. Natural light is something that can transform a room and it doesn’t cost you a penny. Take full advantage of it. The more natural light you can get into any space of your home, the better it can be to transform how it looks. Try and see for yourself.
I hope this has inspired you to make more of your windows.
