Dreaming of a family Christmas in York

November 29, 2014

Everywhere I look on social media it is all about heading to London for Christmas, don’t get me wrong London is fabulous but it isn’t the only place to visit this season. Personally I’d rather head north to York and partake in some of the amazing activities, shopping and sights that are available. Also a chance to relive my youth, having visited York several times as a child with my school. I especially want to take Roo to see the JORVIK Viking Centre as I’m sure she would find it so interesting and would really help her with her school projects.

Planning a trip away is always fun but the planning is that bit more important when you are travelling as a family, especially at Christmas as I need to double check opening times and whether there are any special events being held to make the most of our visit. Luckily there are plenty of sites that allow you to book a hotel room online, including sites such as Hotel Direct and Travelsupermarket.

York Pass

When visiting an area with so much to do it is easy to spend more on entrance fees than you thought. The York Pass however can ease the cost of entrance fees with free entry to over 30 attractions as well as special offer discounts to a number of different activities and food establishments.

Convenient and easy to use

With so many different attractions to visit I’m not sure where we would choose to visit first, although I know that Tigger would love the North Yorkshire Moors Railway or even the National Railway Museum.

York Castle Museum

Back home we have a Norfolk Museums Pass which we have held for the past couple of years and it has allowed us to visit our local museums quite frequently. It would great to take the children to York Castle Museum so that they can see just how different each castle is and with a host of special events going on over the festive season I’m sure they would have fun joining in.

York’s Chocolate Story

It would feel rude of me to visit York and to take a peek around the York’s Chocolate Story especially after reading Kids Days Out Reviews when they visited last summer.

Yorkshire’s Winter Wonderland

Over the past few years one of the must visit attractions in Yorkshire has to be the Yorkshire’s Winter Wonderland. With over 120 shops to satisfy even my shopping habit, a fun fair for the children and even Ice Factor skating it looks like a great family day out (although I’m not too sure about my coordination on the ice).

Meet Santa

It wouldn’t be Christmas without a trip to meet Santa and with the chance to meet the big fella in a couple of amazing locations it’s difficult to decide which one to do. Visit Santa at Narnia at the Rockplex Centre, taking a trip through the wardrobe, past the fur coats into Narnia before winter turns to spring and the children get to meet Santa and take home a present. Or maybe enjoying a 90 minute ride on the Santa Story Train With magical elves providing entertainment throughout the journey with songs, dancing and activities, followed by Santa walking through train handing out a special present to each child.

A fabulous  array of activities, events and places to see and do, I just need to see if Mr Boo can get some time off work so I can make this dream a reality. Apart from all the delights I’ve mentioned above it would just be an easy train journey for my Mam and maybe my brother to come and meet up with us too – bringing my family back together at Christmas would be the greatest present for me.

Have you been to York at Christmas?

Have I missed any amazing activities?

Disclosure: This post is brought to you in collaboration with Hotel Direct, although I really would like to visit York this Christmas
