When I was a teenager I completed a first aid course as part of a cadet group that I was part of. Knowing that I had some knowledge of what to do in an emergency made me feel prepared and with many days and weekends away with my cadet group in the middle of nowhere being able to assist in the case of an emergency was important.
As I started work I continued to refresh my knowledge of first aid and made sure that my first aid at work certificate was always in date just in case I needed to help a colleague or client that needed assistance.
It wasn’t until I became a parent that I started to question whether or not I’d be able to help my child if something happened to them. As part of one of our local groups they ran a baby and child first aid course which I attended as my previous training was more geared towards adults. I left that training feeling better that I had more knowledge of how to help my child however these training sessions aren’t mandatory for all parents so not everyone has the knowledge in order to help their child if something happens.
We all want to protect our children from whatever the world throws at them but sometimes things happen from bumps to scraps, from cuts to broken bones. Whilst accidents and emergencies aren’t part of everyday life it can be easy to forget any training you have received and this is where the British Red Cross: Baby and Child First-Aid App comes into its own…
“Parents and carers: help is at hand. If your child chokes on a sweet or suffers a nasty cut, you’ll only be a few clicks away from knowing exactly what to do.
This free app is packed with useful videos, animations and tips. It provides simple and easy advice, and each skill only takes minutes to learn. You can test your knowledge using the built-in first aid quizzes. There is also a handy device to record your child’s medication needs and any allergies”
In an age where almost all parents have a smartphone to hand it makes sense to have an important app downloaded from the Apple App Store or Google Play. The app enables parents to learn about different scenarios, make sure they are prepared for accidents and emergencies they could face with their children by advising what to have in a first aid kit and empower them to have the knowledge on hand to help when something does happen.
Now that I’m pregnant with baby number three I have been reading through the app in order to refresh my memory on how to help small babies as it has been a number of years since I had a small baby in the house.
