A Dog to Suit You

Owning a dog is a joy, but it is also a big commitment. Therefore, before becoming an owner you need to do your research and make sure you are ready to look after him and her.

The right dog for your lifestyle

A big part of ensuring that your experience of owning a four-legged friend is a good one is choosing the right type of dog for you and your family. They need to be able to fit in with you, your family and your lifestyle.

For example, if you cannot walk far an Alsatian or Dalmatian is not going to be right for you. Both these breeds of dogs have to be walked for around an hour a day. More when they are younger. They need to be stretched physically, so a long stroll along the beach is not likely to be adequate. Therefore, unless you are prepared to hire a dog walker a large dog like this is not going to work for you.

The cost of owning a particular breed

Another factor people forget when trying to work out what type of dog to get is the cost of looking after them. Some dogs are cheaper to keep than others are.

If you are on a tight budget opting for a poodle or something similar that needs regular specialist grooming is not likely to work out well. Of course, you can learn to do the work yourself. However, you have to bear in mind that even this option is going to cost money because you will still need to buy the grooming products. If you do go for this option you have to be sure that you also have the time to do the necessary work.

Your climate

Another consideration is the climate you live in. You need to consider whether the dog you choose will be comfortable. The last thing you want is to expose a Mexican Hairless Dog to a cold climate. In theory, you can keep the dog in a coat, which could help to keep him or her warm enough. Nevertheless, you have to ask yourself is this option really what is best for that breed of dog.

Personal preference

You also need to think about what breed of dog you like. If you like the look of pugs, it is better that you get one if you can rather than settle for a breed you are not keen on.

There are some great puppies for sale from Douglas Hall Kennels. This fully regulated kennel specialises in crossbred dogs, so it is a great place to go if you are looking for something a little different.

Crossbred dogs are good for families where one member likes one breed, and another one prefers something different. Often, you can find a dog that combines the best of both worlds. Crossbred dogs pick up traits and characteristics from the two different breeds.
