As any mum will tell you, your own children are perfect no matter what they may or may not have wrong with them. this being said sometimes we are too close to a situation to see what clearly others see.
Today I had a conversation with a family member about Tigger and I’m not sure how to feel about it. Let me explain…
Ever since Tigger started crawling he has always crawled a little different to the knees and hands approach. He has always dragged his right knee along the floor and used his left foot to push myself along, almost like a commando crawl. Although this looked funny it never really gave me a feeling that I should be concerned. He has attended nursery, health visitors and doctors, all of whom have seen him crawl and nobody has mentioned anything about it.
As Tigger has gotten older and started cruising his left foot would turn outwards and he would bring his knee up higher than the right leg when stepping. Again nobody has raised concerns.
Earlier this week Tigger took his first steps (finally) and although he is still very much unsteady he does bring his left leg up when stepping. This becomes more noticeable when you hold his hand giving his that safety net and he zooms off.
I mentioned this to a friend at work on Friday who said to ask the health visitor at his next review appointment in two weeks time. Whilst visiting family today I happened to mention about my concerns. The family member then said that they too had noticed his left leg and had discussed it with another family member for the last six months. That’s right, six months!
So now I am upset, annoyed and angry that they chose not to raise their concerns with me. I’m trying to think about this logically… Did they not tell me for fear of offending me? Maybe they didn’t want to interfere?
However, all I keep thinking about is that this is my son’s health, how could they not speak up? surely a child’s health is more important than any bruised pride??
Would you speak up?
