Most of us are very diligent about our facial skincare routines, but our body skin often gets a bit overlooked. As the colder season is settling in, your skin will be experiencing more dryness and irritation, requiring some extra love. So, here’s some tips on creating the perfect body skincare routine for your skin.
Gentle cleansing
The first step in both facial and body skincare routine is, of course, cleansing it regularly. But, it’s very important to choose the right products for your needs. A lot of the soaps and shower gels can be too harsh on your skin, especially if you are sensitive to fragrances and other additives. They strip away the natural oils, leaving your skin feeling dry and irritated. Instead, opt for gentle, hydrating body washes with a clean ingredient list.

Exfoliation is also an important part of cleansing. It can help smooth any rough patches as well as get rid of dead skin, helping it absorb products more effectively afterwards. Aim to exfoliate once or twice a week, using a gentle body scrub or exfoliating mitt. Again, avoid overly harsh scrubs that will irritate your skin!
Moreover, when showering, try to use water that’s not overly hot, as this can also disrupt your skin’s natural moisture barrier. Apply your cleanser to a soft cloth or just your hands, avoiding anything too abrasive. After your shower, pat your skin dry with a towel, without rubbing too hard.
Hydrating and nourishing
Moisturizing is absolutely key to a healthy body skincare routine and choosing the right products will make all the difference. Whether your skin is naturally dry or sensitive, there is a selection of body moisturizers for all skin types, so you can find something that will suit your individual needs.
Look for formulas containing glycerin or hyaluronic acid, responsible for attracting moisture to the skin. Ingredients like shea butter or various seed oils are also commonly found in body skincare products, protecting and softening the skin all day.
Thick creams are perfectly fine for everyday use but, if you prefer something with a lighter finish that feels less greasy, look for a hydrating body milk or lotion. Body milks are typically more fluid and absorb easier into the skin, ideal for mornings when you’re heading out the door.

Targeting trouble areas
Some parts of your body may need a little extra attention. For many, these tend to be areas like knees, elbows or heels, which become particularly dry and rough in the winter. If that’s the case for you, incorporate a more intensive moisturizer or balm for these pots specifically. Use it after your regular moisturizer or as a targeted overnight treatment in the evenings.
If you suffer from eczema or similar skin conditions anywhere on your body, you’ll have to be extra careful with what you use on those. It’s best to consult with a dermatologist who can prescribe a targeted steroid cream or extra-sensitive moisturizer for your individual case.
Glowing skin, every season
Body skincare should be a part of your daily routine, alongside your facial skincare. That extra bit of consistent self-care is what will help you achieve a healthy, soft, glowing skin – no matter how cold it gets outside!
