It is more common than most people think. You purchase your first home at a reduced price. Why? Because there are no floors!

Flooring in homes can become damaged due to mold, trauma, or simply because of associated structural issues. So, when you buy a home, it may be the case that the flooring is no longer laid, leaving you with the option of which type to put in.

Luckily, there is more than the old-fashioned hardwood flooring available, and this article will look at the most common types of flooring that you can have fitted.

Stone

If you want to lay a floor in a kitchen or a bathroom, then your first choice will probably be stone. It’s easy to see why!

Stone flooring is a classy, low-maintenance, and damage-resistant option, making it ideal for areas of high traffic. It is also suitable for rooms that have running water, such as a bathroom or kitchen, because it is resistant to mould. So, whether you want Quorn stone, granite, or slate, there is an option out there for you that can add a touch of character to your home.

Hardwood

Of course, just because it is no longer the only option doesn’t mean it is not an option to think about. Hardwood flooring looks great in living rooms, upper passageways, entrance halls, and bedrooms, and, provided that it is cared for properly with varnishing and damp-proofing, it can last a long time. The most popular types include oak, mahogany, pine, and beech. Each one has its own colouring, grain, and aesthetic properties, so you can choose one to match your interior design with ease.

Here’s a tip; if you want a dark hue in your living room, go for mahogany!

Laminate

Laminate flooring is an excellent option if you are on a budget or if you want a more specific look to the flooring. It is waterproof, hardy, and is also great for areas like kitchens and even living rooms. As mentioned earlier, the look that you get with laminate is due to a specific printing on one of the upper layers, which may mimic wood or stone. On top of this, there is a transparent layer that protects the laminate from scratching.

It is usually installed in planks or tiles, which add to the authentic look that it can create. Just make sure it is high quality, or you may find that it tears easily.

Ceramic

On par with stone flooring, ceramic flooring is also made from a natural material (usually clay) and is renowned for being durable.

Whether it is fitted via tiles or slats, ceramic flooring is an excellent option for kitchens and bathrooms as, like natural stone, it is water resilient. It is also very bright in appearance and can add a striking look to any room it is put in.

Vinyl

Coming in sheets, tiles, or planks, vinyl flooring is a synthetic material that is made from PVC. Much like laminate, it can be used to simulate hardwood flooring or stone flooring without the price tag. It is easy to install, is ideal for high-traffic areas, and is easy to install. So, if you are looking to lay flooring in a property that you are going to rent out, this may be an excellent option to pick.
