Dining Room
Are you looking to make your experience of sitting at your dining table even more comfortable? If yes, then consider placing the rug under your dining table. Also, make sure it’s big enough to accommodate all the chairs. It should be big enough so that when you pull out a chair to sit on it, the chair must still be on the rug.
If you’re unsure what rug size you should get, the simplest way to measure the space is to pull out all the chairs and inch the area carefully.
Living Room
Living rooms usually have multiple furniture pieces, making them a little tricky to place the rug there. How you place the rug depends on the size of your living room. Let’s look at rug placement tips for different living room sizes.
Small Living Room
For a small living room, you can go for a 5′ by 8′ rug that can be kept in the room in between your furniture or is tucked under the coffee table. To achieve this, place the carpet around 6-12 inches in front of the sofa to allow enough space for walking. You can also try a bigger rug that fits all furniture and makes your space look expansive.
Mid-sized Living Room
If you’ve got just enough space in your living room, go for a rug size of 8′ by 10′. Place this rug around your main furniture piece, usually the sofa. Keep it in a way that the rug extends beyond the sides of the couch.
Large Living Room
If you have a huge living room, consider going for a 9′ by 13′ rug to frame your space. Place all the furniture on the rug and make sure there’s still some walking room around the outside of the rug. You don’t want to be partially on and off the carpet. You can also divide your large living space into different seating arrangements using rugs. Get different rugs to define each of your dining and seating areas separately.
Bedroom
Your bedroom’s rug size depends on your bed’s size. If you have a queen bed, go for an 8′ by 10′ rug. A 9′ by 12′ rug would work great for those with king-sized ottoman storage beds. The dimensions for the king bed rug will also work for two twin beds in your children’s room. For placement, you can partially tuck the rug under your bed.
To achieve this:
- Lay the rug perpendicular to the bed and pull it under.
- Keep the bed centered on the top to maximize useable rug space.
- If your bedroom is small, place the rug in the middle of the room or at the foot of your bed.
Doing this will help tie your bedroom decor together.

The rug sizes that we’ve suggested above will work for almost all home types. All you have to do is get the right rug for your space and use our tips to achieve the best decor!
