Finding the Right Childcare Situation

February 23, 2013

Whether you decide to go back to work on a part-time or full-time basis at first, finding the right childcare is a huge decision to make. Even parents who stay at home may be in need of a reliable caregiver from time to time. It’s common to have some anxiety about this situation, because you not only want to be sure that you choose a trustworthy person or situation, but also that your child will be able to adjust to the separation.

Compare Different Childcare Options

Many children thrive in a group child care setting. It can teach them socialization skills and provide them with a wider variety of experiences. Other options include leaving your child with a relative, a nanny, or a family-home nursery setting. What’s important to remember in any of these cases is it’s better to start looking sooner rather than later, because good nursery spots fill up quickly. You may face a long waiting list for the care of your choice. Stock up on supplies that you will need like backpacks and bright school name tags to prepare, so that you’re not scrambling at the last minute.

Narrowing Down the Options

After you have decided which type of child care situation that you would prefer, the next step is to find the options available in your area. You can ask other parents on the playground or in your social group where they send their children. Reading online reviews can also be useful, but it’s important to meet with the childcare provider in person. Prepare a list of questions that you have and take note of the facilities available. Ask if you can take your child in for a trial period, to see how they are able to adjust.

Even if your child is not speaking yet, build anticipation for the big day by keeping a positive attitude. Prepare your child’s belongings with kids labels with my nametags and start thinking about what lunches you will prepare to make their day special. You may want to spend time with the nanny or attend the nursery for a few visits along with your child before you leave them alone. With a little research and preparation, your child will be able to thrive in a safe, nurturing setting!
