Prioritising your sleep health to be the best parent you can be

A good night’s sleep shouldn’t be a luxury; today’s technology makes it easier for parents to experience calm and quietude.

For new and seasoned parents alike, a restful night’s sleep can be hard to come by – even while sharing responsibilities. Between toys rattling, TVs blasting, and siblings playing, a mid-day nap becomes impossible. Even at night, when sleep seems like it should come easily, parents experience traffic, appliances humming and loud neighbours. Even though it’s widely known that sleep is of the utmost importance, a good night’s sleep is not a given.

The CDC recommends that adults get seven or more hours of sleep per night, but studies have shown that the majority of new parents are only getting between 5 and 6 hours of sleep. While it’s vital for at least one to be awake to tend to a child crying or for any urgent matters, there are plenty of unnecessary disruptions keeping parents awake when they’re off duty.

The implications of sleep deprivation

While many parents are accustomed to functioning on a few hours of sleep per night, it’s important not to accept poor night sleep as sufficient. Lack of sleep – or insufficient sleep – can result in a variety of health and wellness issues including fatigue, weakened concentration and poor performance in work.

Sleep enhances our ability to learn, memorize, and make logical decisions, which is critical for parents keeping their children healthy and safe at all times. It’s also tied closely with common physical health concerns on many parents’ minds, including weight control and immune system strength.

New studies are also increasingly linking insufficient sleep with poor metabolic health and weight gain. More specifically, lack of sleep is associated with increased oxidative stress, glucose (blood sugar) intolerance, and insulin resistance – all of which impact one’s metabolic health and can lead to weight gain. Research also shows that not getting enough sleep prevents the body from strengthening its immune system and producing the requisite amount of cytokines to fight infection – potentially putting children at risk of getting sick as well by spreading germs.

Additionally, according to the CDC, up to one in seven women experience postpartum depression. Studies have even shown that postpartum sleep difficulties may lead to the persistence of depression after childbirth. That said, a good night’s sleep is vital for new mothers for not only their physical health but their psychological health as well.

Of course, it’s difficult to fall asleep and sleep well while caring for a newborn. Parents must wake up during the night to feed, change diapers, or check on a fussy baby. But even when babies are sleeping well – or one parent is giving the other a night off – it can still be tough for parents to get the rest they need for their health.

Introducing Active Noise Cancelling Technology: The Key to Calm and Quietude

Luckily, there is technology available today that makes achieving calm and quiet easier than ever before, without preventing parents from hearing the necessities –like babies crying or alarms ringing. QuietOn recently launched QuietOn 3 earbuds, the company I work for, the only product on the market with a unique combination of industry-leading active noise cancelling (ANC) technology and a form-factor so small that it fits entirely within one’s ears.

ANC technology reduces low-frequency noise to deliver quietude regardless of one’s sleeping environment – meaning parents can feel confident that they’ll feel their best while enjoying every moment with their children.

It specifically eliminates ambient sounds like traffic and snoring by automatically generating opposite waveforms to nullify low frequencies, resulting in a much quieter and more peaceful environment for sleep when it’s needed most

QuietOn 3 allows parents with newborns to sleep in turns without waking each other up. One parent can be changing a diaper or singing a baby a lullaby in an adjacent room while the other can continue resting. Additionally, kids of all ages can wake up early or stay up late watching TV, without disturbing the sleeping parent.

While ANC nullifies low frequencies, parents will still hear high frequencies like an alarm or a child entering the room to alert them of any issues they’re having. Parents can rest assured that they’re not completely isolated if they need to wake up for something urgent.

When designing QuietOn 3, we knew that a good night’s sleep is often put on the backburner for parents. Our company’s mission is to optimize human performance through improved sleep and ultimately improve life quality. We create products that help parents get the rest they deserve, providing the groundwork for a productive day with their children, at work or any other personal hobbies.

Best practices for optimal sleep health

I am a parent myself, with three kids and a large dog at home. Over the years, I’ve learned through my own personal experience and extensive research some methods to fall asleep and stay asleep second nature. This includes keeping a consistent bedtime, even on the weekends, and avoiding activities that prevent the body from calming down, like alcohol or working out right before sleep.

At the end of the day, the basics are the most important. It’s key to keep the bedroom at a cool temperature and dark enough while ensuring that the bed is comfortable. And of course, it’s critical to be in a quiet space to fully recharge. While lack of silence can often be the most difficult problem to fix, effective technology – like QuietOn 3 – can step in to create quietude.
