When it comes to family trips out on the weekends or during the holidays from school, we can often be unsure as to where to go and what to do. You may have exhausted local parks, been to the beach during the summer months, and perhaps are not wanting an expensive day out.

This is when a trip to the museum could be a great way to spend some time with the family. However, there are a vast amount of museums out there, all showcasing different things. So it is hard to find out which is the best to go. So I have done the hard work for you. Here are some of the best museums in the South of England. 

British Museum – London 

The British Museum is one of the largest collections of artefacts and works coming from all over the world. While there are many exhibits that stay the same throughout the year, the museum also showcases on-off exhibits that you can experience. Making it an enjoyable place to visit more than once. There are also plenty of interactive exhibits that the whole family can get involved in. So this happens to be one of the best museums in the UK.

Tower of London – London

This is also known as Her Majesty’s Royal Palace and Fortress, the Tower of London is a fabulous museum to visit in iconic walls. This was one of the many castles built in the Norman conquest, so there is a lot of history to learn here. For a long time, it was also used as a prison, such as for the famous Guy Fawkes. The main attraction has to be the crown jewels where they are displayed for all to see. A great place to visit.

Tower Bridge – London

This museum is dedicated to the history of the structure and build of Tower Bridge. It may not be for everyone, but the exhibition is housed in the two towers and is interesting. Partly because it is such an iconic site of London.

National Gallery – London

This is a museum that is dedicated to art and is a wonderful different day out for the whole family to experience. The art collection consists of over 2600 art pieces for you to explore and experience. You may even get to see some famous Michaelangelo Artworks. This is definitely a great place to visit if you are looking for things to do with children as the art is all about interpretation and expression, so they can take what they want from it.

Blenheim Palace – Woodstock

This is a lovely museum that focuses on personalities and architecture and the history of those things. There is an informative exhibit dedicated to Sir Winston Churchill which could also be interesting when it comes to learning about the war.

The Roman Baths – Bath 

This is one of the most unique museums you can attend in the UK, and it is definitely worthy of a visit if you are in the area. A chance to see what architecture and the lifestyle was like in Roman times. It showcases the social history, architecture, and archaeological finds. A great location and stunning surroundings.

Dover Castle – Dover

Dover Castle is a chance to visit an English Heritage site, castle ruins but also experience a museum that showcases some of the best history and medieval findings. A great place to take children as the castle grounds can be exciting as well as what is displayed.

Royal Pavillion – Brighton 

The Royal Pavillion in Brighton is another fabulous location for a museum. It exhibits many different exhibits dedicated to the history, social and personalities, as well as architecture. There are other exhibits that are interactive which means that it can be a fantastic location to take children as they can learn a lot. Plus Brighton & Hove is a fabulous place for a family day out.

Brunel’s SS Great Britain – Bristol 

Another unique experience where you get to step aboard one of the vessels used many years ago. The museum showcases aspects of maritime history as well as the history where the ship will have been involved.

HMS Victory at Portsmouth Historic Dock – Portsmouth 

A great place for maritime history is visiting this attraction. HMS Victory at Portsmouth Historic Dock showcases some of the best exhibits dedicated to these incredible shipping vessels and what they will have been involved in. There is also a lot of navy history dating back to Georgian times.

The Eden Project – Bodelva, Cornwall

If you are looking for a museum dedicated to science, and especially natural sciences, climate change, and also technology then The Eden Project is the place to go. In Cornwall, which is also a fabulous place for families, there is a lot to see and do while you are here. One of the highlights is the pavilion where you get to see some of the most incredible natural plants and gives you a glimpse of what it feels like in some of the wildest climates in the world.

The Fitzwilliam Museum – Cambridge 

With over half a million artefacts and artwork, this museum is a sight to behold. With plenty of scope and variation to keep children and adults stimulated and inspired, this is a lovely museum to visit in Cambridge.
