Whilst the children have always been curious about the world around them. Watching David Attenborough documentaries such as Planet Earth II, reading the National Geographic Kids magazine and enjoying out family days out exploring new places. It was during their time learning from home during life in lockdown that they found more reason to know and learn about the world they live in.

There’s the whole world at your feet. And who gets to see it?
But the birds, the stars and the chimney sweeps.

Bert, Mary Poppins

A combination of school set projects alongside listening to countries being discussed on the news had them looking in atlas’ and looking up information via their tablets and resource books.

Learning from home

Something that I wish we’d done during our learning from home time was to invest in one of The Future Mapping Company world maps. Whilst atlas’ have there place in learning there is something wonderful and awe-inspiring seeing the world spread out before you on a large scale.

Thankfully I have now rectified this and the children now have a Classic World Map (1300mm x 720mm | 1:35,000,000) that they can utilise for homework projects, games and to satisfy their curiosity.

The popular Robinson projection creates perfect harmony between the shape and size of each country and continent. Arthur Robinson worked by eye to create his solution to the age-old problem of flattening a sphere. This projection gained worldwide appreciation when it was adopted by National Geographic in 1988.

Utilising the Classic World Map at home

Opting for the plastic-coated classic world map, allowing it to be placed on a table or on the floor so that they are able to get up close to the different continents and discover places. Being wipeable enables the children to circle countries and places, jot down information and highlight key facts whilst they are completing their projects.

It is also great for when you are testing their geographical knowledge, arming them with a different coloured pen and seeing who can find places first – learning through play is so much fun.

Easy to roll up and store away when not in use within the packing tube it is delivered in. Although it would make a fantastic addition to a wall within the home, I’m currently debating on having it added to the wall above my desk. Loving the colours and hoping that it will inspire me whilst I work.

The Future Mapping Company

With a selection of world, country & continent and city maps available from The Future Mapping Company you are bound to find one to suit your needs and tastes. I’m hoping that they will bring out a Classic British Isles map in the same colourway as our Classic World map so that I can have a matching set.
