As a society, we have grown to see Monday’s as the evil day that marks the beginning of a long workweek. But why is that? Is it because we have been conditioned to look at them in that manner or is it because they are really that awful?
It turns out that it really may be that awful for some people, but for most of us, it is just the Monday Blues.
Here are some tips that can help you stomp out the Monday Blues.
Explore your feelings, are they warranted?
Why do you hate Mondays? Is it because you are not satisfied in your job? Is it because something dreaded takes place in your life on Mondays? If you cannot find a real reason to hate Mondays then you probably just suffer from the phenomenon called “Monday blues”.
If you find there is no real reason behind your Monday hatred, it’s best to shake it off and take the day a bit lighter. Monday’s can actually be the most productive day of the week. Use the day to think more about what you can accomplish through the week and start of a list of goals you can cross off as the week progresses. Treat yourself to something special. The way you face your Monday will make a difference in the entire week.
Take steps to take back your Monday
If you find you have valid reasons for hating Mondays, try and find ways to resolve those issues. Sometimes the issue could be a co-worker that sucks all the life out of your day. Other times it may be you feel undervalued at work. Those type of things may be fixable with some basic communication.
If you are in an awful environment that is not fixable, it may be time to move on.
Go to bed at the same time each night
Often on the weekends, we stay out late, sleep in and sometimes even nap throughout the day. Although it feels great while you are doing it, you will pay the price on Monday morning.
Going to bed late on Sunday because you have changed your schedule through the weekend results in an extra tired Monday morning. Starting your day off on a bad note does not do much for your Monday morning attitude.
Begin your Monday on Friday
Friday’s tend to be the day that people goof off a bit more at work. I’m not saying you have to be Debbie Downer and work all through your Friday while your co-workers are enjoying a little extra time at the coffee pot, but if you take a little time to look at Monday’s calendar and cross off any small items that can be done beforehand, your Monday may not seem so overwhelming.
Another tip for Monday preparation is to lay out clothes for Monday before the weekend begins. By laying them out separately, you won’t be stumbling through the dark on Monday trying to match royal blue with black. Going to work with two different shoes on a Monday morning can set a bad tone for the week.
Write down 5 things you enjoy about Mondays
Participating in an attitude of gratitude will help you turn the Monday morning frown upside down. By writing down five things you look forward to on Monday’s you will strip the negativity of a Monday morning.
Mondays are a great day to share what happened over the weekend, spend time with co-workers you genuinely like, have a bit of extra coffee, and enjoy “me” time if you commute on public transit. Not to mention, you have a whole week ahead to do some really great things.
Where your favourite outfit and add some colour
Save Mondays for your favourite outfit. If you bought something new over the weekend, show it off on Monday morning. It will give you something to look forward to and start your week off on the right foot.
Wear something with happy colours and try and avoid greys and tones that scream “Monday blues”. Even dressing up more bland colours with a colourful scarf can change the attitude of your day.
Unplug from work over the weekend
If you are a workaholic and keep your cell phone close by your side checking emails and voicemails all weekend long then you are not taking the needed break awarded to you with a weekend. Although you may be tempted to look, stay unplugged from work and enjoy family, friends, and alone time.
