With the summer holidays less than 24 hours away, I thought it might be nice to sit down and ponder about the days and weeks ahead. How we will fill them with activities, playdates and adventures. Although we don’t have any grand plans, especially for not for heading to foreign shores. We will be making the most of what we have locally and across the UK.
We’ve always done a day on, day off philosophy when it comes to the school holidays. Originally to coincide with my working days so that I could complete activities with the children on the days I was at home. Nowadays we still do this, however, now it is so that we have recharged our batteries and completed chores at home so that on the days we are out we can enjoy them to the fullest.
Activities
- Pokémon Go – It’s fair to say that both Roo and Tigger have been gripped by Pokémon Go recently. Which gives us the perfect opportunity to get out and about to explore the area. Walking helps hatch eggs, as well as discovering new gyms and new Pokémon along the way.
- Trampoline Park – Whilst we might have a trampoline in the garden. It’s not quite the same as heading off to the trampoline park. You can gain so much more height on their trampolines plus they have lots of fun sessions available across the summer.
- Bowling – We bought a Spree book through the school recently and it’s full of different discounts. A couple of bowling alleys are included in there so we’re hoping to enjoy a couple of trips to knock down the pins.
Playdates
- Granny’s coming to visit – Something that started when Roo was little and I had to work throughout the summer was her trip to stay with Granny for a week or two. Over the years, Tigger has joined in on the fun, even though I don’t need the summer childcare they love visiting Granny. This year, Granny’s week off coincides with Roo’s summer performing arts workshop so Granny is coming here to visit.
- Sleepover fun – School holidays are the perfect time to have a sleepover or two with friends. Enjoying films, games and lots of munchies. With no school and nursery to get up for, it doesn’t matter too much what time they eventually fall asleep (although 3am might be pushing their luck).
- Movie dates – Between Meerkat Movies offering 2 for 1 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Plus our local cinemas reducing their ticket prices to £5 for the Odeon and £4.99 for the Vue. It’s a great excuse to catch up on all the latest blockbusters (do they still call them blockbusters? Or am I very much out of the loop?).
Adventures
- Butlins – We’re hoping to get a last-minute deal to whisk the children away to Butlins for a few days. From the very first time, we visited they have loved all the different activities and entertainments available. Between the Skyline Pavilion, fairground and swimming pool they could be occupied from the moment they wake in the morning until they reluctantly go to bed at night.
- Glamping – I have to confess that we are not much of a camping family. Despite Mr Boo and I each doing our fair share during our teenage years. Glamping, however, feels like that compromise between getting back to nature without having to give up too many home comforts.
- Pensthorpe – This is one of those paces we often drive past yet have never managed to squeeze in a visit. This summer we will visit!
- Beamish – One of the places I used to visit as a child on school trips. It still hasn’t lost its wonder and having visited a couple of times with the children, it would be lovely to take What The Dad Said with us this time. I can’t wait to see the recent additions to the open-air museum, plus hop on and off the trams and buses.
Making the most of our Merlin Annual Passes
We are lucky enough to have family Merlin Annual Passes, although these run out at the end of August. So we intend to make the most of these across the summer holidays. With trips to SEALIFE Centre Great Yarmouth and Hunstanton SEALIFE Sanctuary. With hopefully bigger adventures over to LEGOLAND Windsor, Chessington World of Adventures and Thorpe Park too. Plus a trip to London to make the most of the different attractions found on the South Bank.
