Rain on the forecast? Worried about the frenzy that’s going to happen indoors, or about the screen time your kids are probably going to get? Don’t! To help you out with just that, we’ve compiled a list of 7 simple and interesting rainy day activities you can get them to do!
Rock Painting
Rock painting is a super fun and easy activity you could get your kids to try when they’re stuck indoors. All they need to do is get out into the yard, pick up a few medium-sized stones with rounded/flat edges. Get them inside, wash them and then paint them with acrylic paint pens or washable paints. To take it up a notch, you can also get your kids to stick some sequins or googly eyes on the stones!
Building a Fort
Rainy days are the perfect time to get out those blankets, and build that blanket fort in the kid’s room or even the living room if they want to! There’s just a different kind of excitement about this one! Don’t be surprised if you find your kids stay in there for hours colouring, reading or just playing with their toys.
Making New Crayons
Here’s a super fun and easy craft idea that never gets old! Your kids may have tons of crayons- some of them broken, some of them small from all the colouring, and here’s a great way to put them to use!
Ask your kids to break them up into small pieces- around an inch or two each (make sure you remove the covering though). Mix them all together and place a little of them in each section of a silicone mould. Get them into the microwave until they melt, and allow them to solidify before you remove them! Viola! Beautiful multi-colour crayons are ready!
Board Game Time
Board games are always a lot of fun, but when it is a rainy day and the entire family is indoors, for the most part, you can use that to transform a dull and boring day into an exciting one! This can be a great way to get your family (especially kids) to stay away from the screens and make it a sort of family tradition where you all sit down and play together!
Get Cooking!
This one’s an absolute winner, and also an excellent way to get your little one to pick up some basic cooking skills while he’s at it. Look up some simple kid-friendly recipes online, grab a few items from your pantry, and get your little ones to give it a try! Be there around to supervise, but let them do most of it. Cooking is undoubtedly one of the best rainy day activities for kids.
Hosting a cooking competition is another great way to take it all up a notch!
Book Time
There’s nothing like a cup of hot coffee and a good book on a rainy day, isn’t it? Well, now’s the time to get your kids to do that too. Encourage them to get out the books they have, take their pick, and spend some time reading! What’s more, reading can also help strengthen your kids’ vocabulary, and who knows, they might love it more than you would have expected!
Collage Fun
If you’ve officially run out of ideas, you might want to give this one a try! Get out those old newspapers and magazines and encourage your little ones to try creating a collage! All the selecting, cutting and sticking can be loads of fun, and can keep them engrossed for a few hours for sure! You could also give them some fun topics (think aquatic animals, plants etc) to keep them going!
